The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other characteristics of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is categorized as NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, corresponding to two, four, and six sets of test units, respectively. These configurations allow for the simultaneous use of two, four, or six viscometers.

The system retains the JWC precision temperature-controlled bath, a result of our 1990s national research project, and continues to deliver temperature fluctuations and distribution within ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automated testing system will feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid dispenser with precision up to 0.1%, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-touch dispensing).

A double-layered glass isolation designed sample bottle, allowing the prepared solution to dissolve quickly and evenly in the jingque isothermal oscillating bath, undisturbed by water.

Automated liquid delivery system, no longer requiring manual feeding for the viscosity tube, a comprehensive unit that automatically filters the solution before delivering it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed. The system will automatically extract waste fluid and wait for the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply initiate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of fluid injection—immersion—recycling—cleaning—drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe viscosity automatic measuring system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, internally equipped with various sensors, paired with a central controller, capable of performing tests and also cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 Precision Constant Temperature Water Baths of the JWC series, installed with testing units to ensure normal operating temperature environment (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional, manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with double-set sample dissolution bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding moisture interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Automatic Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, ensures precise measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Loader

Samples are dissolved in the dissolution bottle and placed here. After the system starts testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various cleaning fluids. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the unit's viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines used during the automatic testing. Upon completion of the cleaning, proceed with drying.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with printers, keyboards, and monitors, etc., as terminals.

2. Layout of the Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automatic testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's arrangement, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure that all pipe distances are as short as possible, while also considering practical operations such as adding and pouring liquids. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Processing

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

3.2 Quick Dissolution of Samples

Please refer to the WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), featuring a dissolution bottle with a double-layered insulating sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be quite lengthy, taking one, even more, hours. It requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate the process, but excessive temperature will lead to degradation, so the temperature needs to be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the effect of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with dedicated pressure sources for the injection, testing, transmission of washing fluid, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the varying solvent components of the samples and washing fluid.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel. The constant pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the sample solution, while the pump pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the washing liquid.

Vacuum pressure regulation methods are as follows:

Press the pattern key (left button), until L appears0-2, which shows the current lower limit of the vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the pattern key again to display H1After -2, it displays the current upper limit of vacuum degree. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inflow and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent sample bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is necessary before testing, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at once. Place the dissolution vial on the autosampler, hold down the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the vial holder will advance. Stop when the previous dissolution vial (used for rinsing) is in the pipette position. The pipette will then descend and insert into the volumetric flask, while the volumetric flask for the test is automatically sealed. After starting the test, the testing system will automatically extract the solution from the dissolution vial, complete the rinse, and automatically drain the liquid.

Continue holding the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing station, awaiting test initiation. Upon completion of the test, the sample vial is returned to the starting position.

Sample Solution Bottle Location

Washing Station: The suction tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the mouth of the rear beaker automatically covers it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test complete, reposition the dissolution bottle to the starting position.

Upon initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the operational state. The subsequent tasks are performed automatically by the system. The operator can observe the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up in case of any issues encountered during the test.

Test complete. After the system automatically discharges waste fluid, the process proceeds to the next test.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After using the viscometer for a period, it should be cleaned.

First, place a solution bottle in the rinse position (it can also be the test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of cleaning fluids and solvents, as well as potable water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, you can initiate and complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

Select "Detergent Soak Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Bottles containing liquid require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleaning is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid, timely replenishment is essential.

Remove the cap with care, noting the original state. Some may have a layer of Teflon film for the corrosion issue of the cap. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's numbering and the corresponding entrance marked on the label. When replacing the cap, ensure it is tightly sealed and check for a good seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction port maintains a vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction port. The machine has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump side indicator is observed to be below "min," oil should be added to the vacuum pump from the suction port until it reaches between the second and third marks on the indicator.
