The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other properties of polymers. It is categorized into NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6 models based on the number of test units configured in the system, which correspond to two, four, and six sets of test units, respectively. These configurations can simultaneously support the use of two, four, or six viscometers.

The measurement of the time required for a certain volume of solution to flow through a capillary, originally performed manually.

Originally, the determination of data validity was done manually.

Just like the NCY Automatic Viscosity Meter, it will still be executed by the system.

The system will still display the flow of the solution in the capillary viscometers of each unit in real-time and visually.

The system will still automatically repeat testing and eliminate out-of-tolerance results to achieve accurate flow time.

The system still retains the achievements from our 1990s national research project—the JWC precision temperature-controlled bath—and continues to consistently provide temperature fluctuations and distributions superior to ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring the consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid preparation instrument with a concentration accuracy up to 0.1%, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-touch liquid preparation).

Double-glazed isolation design of the sample bottle allows the prepared solution to dissolve rapidly and uniformly in the precise temperature oscillating bath without interference from moisture.

Automatic Liquid Delivery System, eliminating the need for manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive device that automatically filters the solution and delivers it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed. The system will automatically extract waste liquid and await the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of washing fluid injection, soaking, recovery, cleaning, and drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, equipped with various sensors and a central controller, capable of performing tests and cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision thermostatic baths for placement of test units, ensuring normal operating environment temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, instruction manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Solving Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, instruction manual included), equipped with a double set of sample bottles, operates at precise temperatures and effectively avoids water interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Auto-Determination System, integrated within the central control system, enabling precise measurement of the time it takes for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Inserter

Samples are dissolved in the dissolution vials and placed here. After the system is started for testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various cleaning fluids. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the unit's viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during automatic testing. After cleaning, perform a drying process.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminals.

2. Layout of the automatic viscosity measurement system

This automated testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's arrangement, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

3.2 Quick Dissolution of Samples

See WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), equipped with a double-layered jacketed sample bottle.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be very lengthy, taking one or even more hours. It needs to be shaken at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate the process. Excessive temperature will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the influence of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with specialized pressure sources for the injection, testing, and transmission of washing fluids, as well as for drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the sample and the various solvent components of the washing fluid.

Vacuum pressure adjustment method:

Two pressure gauges are located on the control system panel: the constant pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the sample solution, while the pump pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the wash liquid.

Vacuum pressure adjustment method is as follows:

Press the pattern key (left button), until it shows L0-2 shows the current lower limit of vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the pattern key again to display H1After -2, the current upper limit of vacuum degree is displayed. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Liquid Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is needed before testing, approximately 26mL of solution must be prepared at once. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, press the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (for rinsing) is in the liquid uptake tube position. Lower the uptake tube into the volumetric flask, while the cap automatically covers the mouth of the volumetric flask intended for testing. After initiating the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinsing, and then automatically drain the liquid.

Keep pressing the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing position, wait for the test to start. Once the test is complete, the sample vial is returned to the starting position.

Wash Position: The liquid tube is inserted into a solvent bottle in front, and the mouth of the subsequent solvent bottle automatically covers it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test complete, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. The operator can view the progress of the unit's test on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues arise during the test.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges the waste liquid and then proceeds to the next test.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After using the viscometer for a period, it should be cleaned.

Firstly, place a sample vial in the rinsing position (or test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert to the bottom of the bottle (this is crucial!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and clean water, and verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, the full cleaning-drying process can be initiated and completed.

Select "Wash Solution Immersion Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Vessels for storing liquids require regular attention to the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleanup is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid supplies, timely replenishment should be ensured.

When removing the bottle cap, pay attention to the original state of installation. Some may come with a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene film, which is for the corrosion issue of the cap. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's numbering and the corresponding entrance indicated on the bottle label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed and note the seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction port maintains vacuum (low pressure), it can cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction port. The machine has a dedicated program set in the control system to prevent oil spraying, but after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the oil gauge on the pump side is observed to be below "min," oil should be added to the vacuum pump from the suction port until it reaches between the first and second graduation lines on the oil gauge.
