The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other properties of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is categorized as NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, with corresponding configurations of two, four, and six test units, respectively. This allows for simultaneous use by two, four, or six viscometers.

The measurement of the time required for a certain amount of solution to flow through a capillary, previously performed manually.

Originally, the determination of data validity was performed manually.

Like the NCY Automatic Viscosity Meter, it will still be executed by the system.

The system will still display the flow of the solution in the capillary viscometers within each unit in real-time and visually.

The system will still automatically repeat testing and eliminate out-of-tolerance results to obtain accurate flow time.

The system still incorporates the research project outcomes from the 1990s that we own—the JWC Precision Constant Temperature Bath—and continues to deliver long-term temperature fluctuations and distributions superior to ±0.01℃, ensuring consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid dispenser with precision up to 0.1%, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-touch dispensing).

Double-glazed vials with isolation design, ensuring the prepared solution dissolves rapidly and evenly in a precise temperature oscillating bath, unaffected by moisture interference.

Automatic liquid delivery device, no longer requiring manual feeding for the viscosity tube, a comprehensive setup that can automatically filter the solution and then deliver it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed, the system will automatically extract the waste liquid and await the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary washing and testing.

When it's necessary to clean capillaries, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of liquid introduction, soaking, recycling, cleaning, and drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, internally equipped with various sensors, in conjunction with the central controller, can perform tests and also clean the capillary viscometer within the unit, among other tasks.

1.2 JWC series precision temperature-controlled water baths for placement of test units, ensuring the units operate in a normal working environment temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, instruction manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Solving Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, instruction manual included), equipped with a double set of sample bottles, operates at precise temperatures, effectively avoiding water interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Automatic Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, enables precise measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Inserter

Samples are dissolved in the solvent bottle and placed here. After the system initiates testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various detergents to clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during the automatic testing process for a specific unit in the central system. After cleaning, perform a drying treatment.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminals.

2. Layout of the Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automated testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's setup, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering practical operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rises in between.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

See the PY Automatic Mixture Instrument manual (optional accessories).

3.2 Fast Dissolution of Sample

Please refer to the WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), which includes a sample dissolution bottle with a double-layered insulating sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be quite lengthy, taking one or even more hours, and it requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate the process. Excessive temperature will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with specialized pressure sources for fluid intake and testing of viscometers, transmission of washing solutions, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the sample and solvent components of the washing solutions.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

Two pressure gauges are located on the control system panel. The constant pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the sample solution, while the pump pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the wash solution:

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the pattern key (left button), until it shows L0-2 shows the lower limit of the current vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode key again to display H1After -2, the current upper limit of vacuum degree is displayed. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, pour out half of the solution from the solvent bottle in the oscillator into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit position.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is needed before testing, about 26mL of solution must be prepared at one time. Place the dissolution bottle on the automatic sampler, press the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the dissolution bottle rack advances. Stop when the previous dissolution bottle (used for rinsing) is in the position of the syringe, and the syringe descends to insert into the volumetric flask. At the same time, the volumetric flask waiting for testing automatically covers its mouth. After starting the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the dissolution bottle, finish rinsing, and automatically discharge the liquid.

Keep holding the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing station, waiting for the test to start. Test completed, the sample vial returns to the starting position.

Sample Solvent Bottle Location

Wash position: The suction tube is inserted into a solvent bottle in front, and the mouth of the solvent bottle behind automatically covers it.

Test Port: Insert the liquid tube into the vial at the back.

Test completed, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. The operator can observe the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up when issues are encountered during the test.

Test completed; after the system automatically discharges the waste liquid, it proceeds to the next test phase.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After a period of use, the viscometer should be cleaned.

First, place a solvent sample vial in the rinsing position (or the test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and potable water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, you can initiate and complete the full cleaning-drying process.

Select "Wash Solution Immersion Cleaning" on the computer interface, and the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

The storage bottles require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleaning is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid types, it's important to ensure timely replenishment.

When removing the bottle cap, pay attention to the original state of installation. Some may have a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene film attached to prevent corrosion issues. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's identification number and the corresponding entrance marked on the bottle label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed and ensure a good seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction inlet maintains vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction inlet. This unit has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump side's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, add vacuum pump oil to the space between the first and second scale lines in the suction inlet.
