The Viscosity Measurement System is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for measuring the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average polymerization degree, and viscosity average molecular weight of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is categorized as NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, corresponding to two, four, and six sets of test units, respectively. This allows for simultaneous use with two, four, or six viscometers.

The measurement of the time required for a certain volume of solution, previously performed manually, to flow through a capillary.

Originally, the determination of data validity was performed manually.

Just like the NCY Automatic Viscosity Meter, it will still be executed by the system.

The system will still display the solution flow in the capillary viscometers of each unit in real-time and visually.

The system will still automatically repeatedly test and eliminate out-of-spec results, achieving accurate flow time.

The system still retains the research achievements from the 1990s national science and technology projects we own—the JWC Precision Temperature Control Baths. It will continue to deliver temperature fluctuations and distributions superior to ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid dispensers with precision up to 0.1% for preparing sample solutions conveniently (one-button liquid preparation).

A double-glass isolation designed solvent bottle, ensuring that the prepared solution can quickly and uniformly dissolve in the jingque (exquisite) thermostatic oscillating bath without interference from water.

Automated Liquid Feeding Device, no longer requiring manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive system that automatically filters and transfers the solution into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed. The system will automatically extract waste fluid and wait for the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of fluid injection - soaking - recovery - cleaning - drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, internally equipped with various sensors, working in conjunction with a central controller, can perform testing and also clean the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision constant-temperature water baths for placement of test units, ensuring the normal operating environment temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, instruction manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolving Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, instruction manual included), equipped with double set of sample dissolution bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding moisture interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Auto-Measurement System, included in the central control system, enables precise measurement of the time it takes for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Inserter

Samples are dissolved in the solvent bottle and placed here. After the system is activated for testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various detergents to clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during automated testing for a specific unit within the central system. Upon completion of the cleaning, dry the unit.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminals.

2. Arrangement of Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automated testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's requirements, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering practical operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

See the PY Automatic Mixture Dispenser manual (optional accessories).

3.2 Rapid Solubility of Samples

Please refer to the WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), which includes a sample dissolution bottle with a double-layered insulating sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be very lengthy, taking up to one, or even more, hours. It requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate the process. Excessive heat can lead to degradation, so the temperature needs to be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the action of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with different pressure sources specifically for the liquid intake and testing of viscometers, transfer of washing liquids, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the varying solvent components of the samples and washing liquids.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel: one for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the sample solution with a constant pressure gauge, and the other for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the washing liquid with a pump pressure gauge.

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the pattern key (left button), until it appears L0-2 shows the lower limit of the current vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode key again to display H1-2 indicates the current upper limit of vacuum degree. Press the up and down buttons to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the dissolved sample bottle from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent sample bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit position.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is necessary before testing, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at once. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, press the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (for rinsing) is in the liquid tube position, then the liquid tube descends and inserts into the volumetric flask, while the volumetric flask for the test is automatically sealed. After starting the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinse, and automatically discharge the liquid.

Continue holding the test button, another sample bottle is sent to the test station, wait for the test to start. Test completed, the sample bottle is returned to the starting position.

Wash Pot: Insert the liquid tube into the front beaker, and the mouth of the rear beaker will automatically cover it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test complete, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. Operators can observe the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues are encountered during the test.

Test completed; after the system automatically discharges the waste liquid, it proceeds to the next test phase.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After using the viscometer for a period, it needs to be cleaned.

First, place a solvent sample bottle in the rinsing position (or test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and potable water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, you can initiate and complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

Select "Wash Solution Soak Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Vessel liquid levels must be monitored regularly. For waste liquid collection, timely cleanup is required when the level is high; for new liquid, timely replenishment is necessary.

When removing the cap, note the original installation orientation. Some may come with a layer of PTFE film to address the cap corrosion issue. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to pay attention to the tube number and the corresponding inlet marked on the label. When replacing the cap, make sure to tighten it securely and check for a proper seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction port maintains vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction port. The machine has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, add vacuum pump oil to the oil gauge between the first and second marks in the suction port.
