The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other properties of polymers. It is categorized into NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6 models based on the number of test units configured, with corresponding setups of two, four, and six test units, respectively. These configurations allow for simultaneous use by two, four, or six viscometers.

The measurement of the time required for a certain amount of solution to flow through a capillary, previously performed manually.

Originally, the determination of data validity was manually conducted.

Like the NCY Automatic Viscosity Meter, it will still be executed by the system.

The system will still display the flow of the solution in the capillary viscometers within each unit in real-time and vividly.

The system will still automatically repeat testing and eliminate out-of-tolerance results to obtain accurate flow time.

The system retains the JWC precision temperature-controlled槽, a result of our 1990s national research project, and continues to consistently deliver temperature fluctuations and distributions better than ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring the consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

An automatic liquid preparation instrument with precision up to 0.1% concentration, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-click liquid preparation).

Double-layer glass isolation designed sample bottles, allowing the prepared solution to dissolve quickly and evenly in a precise恒温 oscillating bath without interference from moisture.

Automatic liquid feeding device, no longer requiring manual feeding for the viscosity tube, a comprehensive unit that automatically filters and delivers the solution into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic testing completed; the system will automatically extract the waste liquid and await the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply initiate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of fluid injection—immersion—recycling—cleaning—drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe Automatic Viscosity Measurement System consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, equipped with various sensors and a central controller, capable of performing tests and cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision temperature-controlled water baths for placement of test units, ensuring normal operating environmental temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with a double set of sample dissolution bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding water interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Auto-Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, ensures precise measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Loader

The sample, after dissolution in a dissolution bottle, is placed here. Once the system is initiated for testing, the required solution will automatically be filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Washing System

Pre-set various detergents for cleaning. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during the automatic testing. After cleaning, perform a drying process.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with printers, keyboards, and monitors, etc., as terminals.

2. Layout of the Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automated testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's requirements, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in the middle.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

Please refer to the PY Automatic Mixture Dispenser manual (optional accessories).

3.2 Rapid Solubility of Sample

Please refer to the WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (accessory), which includes a dissolution bottle with a double-layered sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be very lengthy, taking up to one, or even more, hours. It requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate the process. Excessive heat will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the influence of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with dedicated pressure sources for the introduction and testing of viscometers, transmission of washing fluids, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the varying solvent compositions of the samples and washing fluids.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel: one for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the sample solution with a constant pressure gauge, and the other for regulating and controlling the working pressure of the washing liquid with a pump pressure gauge.

Vacuum pressure regulation methods are as follows:

Press the mode button (left button), until it shows "L"0-2 shows the lower limit of the current vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode button again to display H1After -2, it displays the current upper limit of vacuum. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note, the vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, pour out half of the solution from the dissolved sample bottle in the oscillator into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if it's necessary to rinse before testing, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at a time. Place the solution bottle on the autosampler, hold down the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solution bottle holder will advance. Stop when the previous solution bottle (for rinsing) is in the liquid tube position. The liquid tube will then descend and insert into the volumetric flask, while the volumetric flask's mouth is automatically covered. After starting the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solution bottle, complete the rinse, and automatically drain the liquid.

Keep pressing the test button, send another sample vial to the testing station, and wait for the test to start. Once the test is complete, return the sample vial to the starting position.

Sample Solution Bottle Location

Wash Station: The liquid tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the mouth of the subsequent beaker automatically covers it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test complete, reposition the solution bottle to the starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state, with subsequent operations handled automatically by the system. Operators can observe the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up when issues arise during testing.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges waste liquid before proceeding to the next test.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After a period of use, the viscometer should be cleaned.

First, place a solvent sample bottle in the rinse position (or test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of cleaning fluids and solvents, as well as potable water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, the full cleaning-drying process can be initiated and completed.

Select "Wash Solution Soak Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Bottles containing liquids require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, it is necessary to clean up promptly when the level is high; for new liquid supplies, timely replenishment is essential.

Remove the cap with care, ensuring the original state is maintained. Some may have a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene film attached to address the corrosion issue of the cap. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's numbering and the corresponding entry marked on the label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed and check for a proper seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

When operating this type of vacuum pump, if the suction port maintains vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction port. This unit has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil leakage. However, after a certain period of use, the oil level may decrease. When the oil level in the pump's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, add vacuum pump oil to the second graduation line on the gauge from the suction port.
