The viscosity measurement system is a specialized and automated testing equipment designed for the specific viscosity, viscosity number, average degree of polymerization, and viscosity average molecular weight of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is divided into NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6 models, which correspond to dual, quadruple, and sextuple configurations of test units, respectively. These setups can simultaneously support two, four, or six viscometers.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid dispensing systems with a precision up to 0.1% concentration, enabling convenient preparation of sample solutions (one-touch dispensing).

A double-layer glass isolation design of the solution bottle ensures that the prepared solution dissolves quickly and evenly in a precise, temperature-controlled oscillating bath, free from interference by moisture.

Automatic Liquid Delivery System, eliminating the need for manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive device that automatically filters the solution and delivers it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed; the system will automatically extract waste liquid and await the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply initiate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of washing fluid injection, soaking, recovery, cleaning, and drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measuring system consists of the following components:

1.1 The NCY test unit, equipped with various sensors and a central controller, is capable of performing tests and cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit, among other tasks.

1.2 Precision Constant Temperature Water Baths of the JWC series, installed with testing units to ensure optimal operating temperature for the units (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, instruction manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Solving Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, instruction manual included), equipped with double set of sample bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding water interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Automatic Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, ensures precise measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Loader

Samples are dissolved in the solvent bottle and placed here. After the system is activated for testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various detergents to clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during automatic testing for a specific unit within the central system. Upon completion of the cleaning, perform a drying process.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminal equipment.

2. Layout of the Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automatic testing system consists of several components and can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's setup, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as filling and pouring. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Processing

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

3.2 Fast Dissolution of Samples

Please refer to the WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), featuring a sample dissolution bottle with a double-layered insulating sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be very lengthy, taking up to an hour or more, and requires shaking at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate completion. Excessive heat can lead to degradation, so the temperature needs to be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the action of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with different pressure sources specifically for the liquid supply and testing of viscometers, transmission of washing fluids, and drying. Depending on the different solvent components of the samples and washing fluids, different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted to accommodate.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel. The constant pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the sample solution, while the pump pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the washing liquid.

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the mode key (left button), until L appears0-2, which shows the current lower limit of vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode key again to display H1After -2, it shows the current upper limit of vacuum degree. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is necessary before testing, you will need to prepare approximately 26mL of solution at once. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, hold down the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (used for rinsing) is in the position of the syringe. The syringe descends and inserts into the volumetric flask, while the flask's mouth is automatically covered by the next flask waiting for testing. After initiating the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinse, and then automatically drain the liquid.

Continue holding the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing station, waiting for the test to start. Once the test is complete, the sample vial is returned to the starting position.

Washing Station: The suction tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the opening of the following beaker automatically covers it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test completed, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. The operator can view the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues arise during the test.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges waste liquid and proceeds to the next test phase.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After a period of use, the viscometer should be cleaned.

First, place a solution bottle in the rinse position (it can also be the test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of detergents, solvents, and potable water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, you can initiate and complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

Select "Cleaning with Detergent Immersion" on the computer interface, and the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Storage Bottle

The liquid storage bottles require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleaning is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid, timely replenishment should be ensured.

Remove the cap with care, ensuring the original state is maintained. Some caps may be coated with a Teflon film to prevent corrosion. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's identification number and the corresponding entrance indicated on the label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed and properly sealed.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, if the suction port maintains a vacuum (low pressure), can cause oil to spray out from the suction port. The machine has a dedicated program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the oil gauge on the pump side is observed to be below "min," oil should be added to the vacuum pump from the suction port to between the two marks on the oil gauge.
