The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other properties of polymers. It is divided into models NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, corresponding to configurations with two, four, and six test units, respectively, allowing simultaneous use with two, four, or six viscometers.

The system retains the state-of-the-art research project outcomes from the 1990s—our JWC precision constant-temperature baths—and continues to consistently provide temperature fluctuations and distributions superior to ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring consistency of test data at any moment and position.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

An automatic liquid dispenser with precision up to 0.1% concentration, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-button liquid preparation).

Double-glazed sample bottles with isolation design, ensuring the prepared solution dissolves rapidly and evenly in the precise temperature oscillating bath, unaffected by water interference.

Automatic liquid delivery system, no longer requiring manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive unit that automatically filters and delivers the solution into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed. The system will automatically extract waste liquid and wait for the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of fluid injection, soaking, recovery, cleaning, and drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measuring system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, internally equipped with various sensors,协同with a central controller, can perform testing and also clean the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision thermostatic baths for placement of test units, ensuring normal working environment temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Liquid Mixture Instrument (optional, manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Solving Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with dual sample bottles, operates at precise temperatures, effectively avoiding water interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Automatic Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, provides an accurate measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Inserter

Samples are dissolved in the dissolution vials and placed here. After the system is activated for testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Washing System

Pre-set various detergents to clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during the automatic testing process for a specific unit in the central system. After cleaning, perform drying treatment.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with printers, keyboards, and monitors, etc.

2. Layout of the automatic viscosity measurement system

This automatic testing system is composed of several components and can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's setup, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipe distances are as short as possible, while also considering practical operations such as adding and pouring liquids. The cover image shows a typical reasonable arrangement.

2.2 The pipeline from the central control unit to the viscometer must only slope downwards from the central control system, with no rise in between.

3. Sample Processing

3.1 Automatic Solution Preparation

3.2 Quick Dissolving Sample

See WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), featuring a sample dissolution flask with a double-layered insulating sleeve.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be quite lengthy, taking one or even more hours, and requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate completion. Excessive heat will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the influence of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with dedicated pressure sources for the liquidation, testing, transmission of cleaning fluid, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the solvent composition of the samples and cleaning fluid.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

Two pressure gauges are located on the control panel: one for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the sample solution with a constant pressure gauge, and the other for regulating and controlling the working pressure of the washing fluid with a pump pressure gauge.

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the mode key (left button) until L appears.0-2 shows the lower limit of the current vacuum setting. Press the up and down buttons to change the upper limit setting.

Press the pattern key again to display H1After -2, the current upper limit of vacuum degree is displayed. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if it's necessary to rinse before testing, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at a time. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, hold down the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle rack will advance. Wait until the previous solvent bottle (for rinsing) is in the liquid tube position, then stop. The liquid tube will descend and insert into the volumetric flask, while the volumetric flask for the test sample will automatically cover its mouth. After initiating the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinse, and then automatically discharge the liquid.

Keep pressing the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing position, wait for the test to start. Test complete, the sample vial returns to the starting position.

Sample Solvent Bottle Location

Wash Position: The liquid tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the mouth of the subsequent beaker automatically seals.

Test Port: Insert the liquid tube into the sample bottle at the back.

Test complete, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After launching the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. Operators can view the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues arise during the test.

Test completed; after the system automatically discharges waste fluid, it proceeds to the next test phase.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After using the viscometer for a period of time, it needs to be cleaned.

First, place a solvent sample bottle in the rinsing position (or test position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate amount of cleaning fluid and solvent, as well as potable water. Verify that there is sufficient remaining space in containers for waste liquids and wastewater.

Then, you can start and complete the full cleaning-drying process.

Select "Detergent Immersion Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Storage bottles require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleaning is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid types, timely replenishment is essential.

Remove the cap with care to maintain its original condition; some may have a PTFE film for corrosion protection. When reinserting the plastic tube, ensure to note the tube's number and the corresponding entrance marked on the bottle label. Tighten the cap securely upon replacement, ensuring a proper seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

During operation, if the suction port of this vacuum pump maintains a vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction port. The machine has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump side's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, oil should be added to the vacuum pump from the suction port until it reaches the second marking on the oil gauge.
