Chemical Cleaning Scale Removal Process

Recirculating Closed Circuit Cleaning

Recirculating cleaning utilizes two existing parallel ash piping lines to form a loop, creating a recirculation system with the cleaning pump station. It involves adding a solution of a certain acidity concentration, which circulates through the ash water pipes for cleaning. As the acid washing reduces to a certain level, the solution is continuously replenished with acid. For short-distance single ash water pipes, if conditions permit, a temporary pipeline can be laid to form a recirculation loop for cleaning. This process must be carried out while the system is offline, and it is complex and costly.

Open path cleaning

During cleaning, two grey pipes cannot form a loop; only single grey pipe open-circuit cleaning is allowed. The method involves connecting one end of the grey pipe to the cleaning unit and continuously preparing a specific concentration of cleaning solution in the dosing tank, then continuously or intermittently injecting it into the grey pipe. This process requires adding cleaning equipment while the system is offline, which increases the cost.

Continuous Cleaning Without Shutdown

The process involves continuously injecting a certain amount of acidic solution while the ash pipe is operating normally without interruption, simultaneously introducing a certain quantity of ash pipe operation cleaning inhibitor and pipeline descaling agent, and performing an open-loop cleaning. The main function of the cleaning aid is to promote the reaction between the acidic solution and the ash scale at a certain concentration and flow rate, while also increasing its solubility in water, reducing the occurrence of airlock, and ensuring the quality of ash pipe cleaning.

The procedure is as follows: Prior to cleaning, estimate the required acid quantity based on the total scale in the pipeline. Then, calculate the acid addition rate and the flow rate for the injection of cleaning and corrosion inhibitor into the sludge conveying pipe, based on the flow rate of the sludge water and its acidity. During cleaning, take samples at the front end of the sludge pipe every 30 minutes to test the acidity and strictly control it by adjusting the flow rate of acid addition. In the later stage of cleaning, take samples at the end of the sludge pipe every 15 minutes to test the pH value. When the pH value reaches a certain level and remains unchanged for 30 minutes, the cleaning process can be considered complete.

2. High-pressure water jet cleaning equipment
High-pressure water jet cleaning offers high efficiency, low costs, non-damaging to workpieces, environmental friendliness, ease of operation, and safety.
The high-pressure water technology offers the following advantages.

(1) Excellent Cleaning Quality - During high-pressure water jet cleaning of pipelines and the internal bores of heat exchangers, all scaling and obstructions within the pipes are thoroughly removed, revealing the metal substrate. The high-pressure water jet, with its immense energy and supersonic speed, is fully capable of destroying hard scaling and obstructions without causing any damage to the metal.

Due to the pressure of high-pressure water being less than the compressive strength grade of metal, high-pressure cleaning will not damage the base material being cleaned.

(2) Fast Cleaning Speed: Due to the combined crushing effects of water jet scouring, splitting, shearing, and grinding, scale can be quickly broken and removed, making the cleaning speed several to ten times faster than traditional chemical methods, sandblasting, simple mechanical, and manual methods.

Additionally, parts cleaned with high-pressure water jetting do not require secondary cleaning; whereas, after chemical cleaning, the surface chemical must be rinsed off with clean water.

(3) Non-Environmental Pollution: As high-pressure water jet cleaning uses pure water as the medium, it does not produce large amounts of dust like sandblasting or simple mechanical cleaning, which can pollute the atmosphere and harm health. It also does not generate a large volume of waste liquid like some chemical cleaning methods, which can contaminate rivers, soil, and water quality. The water jet, using pure water, is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. After atomization, it can also reduce the dust concentration in the work area, lowering atmospheric dust levels from 80mg/m³ using other methods to below the national safety standards, thus ensuring no pollution is caused.

Pipe Scale

(1) Classified by chemical composition, they can be categorized into carbonate scale, sulfate scale, silicate scale, and mixed scale, etc. The main components of carbonate scale are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate; the main components of sulfate scale and silicate scale are calcium sulfate and silicate compounds, respectively.

(2) Categorized by physical properties, there are two types: a hard scale that firmly adheres to the pot shell and pipe walls, and a loose sediment that is easily detached.
Lime scale primarily forms due to the salts of calcium and magnesium present in the boiler feed water, which precipitate and adhere to the metal surface upon heating. Lime scale has a very low thermal conductivity, approximately 2 to 5 times that of ordinary steel. When lime scale accumulates on the boiler's heating surface, it significantly worsens the heat transfer efficiency and affects the boiler's performance; it can also cause metal materials to burn out due to localized overheating, even leading to pipe explosion accidents; it accelerates galvanic corrosion, causing pipeline lime scale corrosion and speeding up the damage to the heating surface. Once lime scale forms, it should be promptly removed using mechanical or chemical methods.
