The Viscosity Measurement System is a specialized and automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other characteristics of polymers. It is categorized into NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6 models based on the number of test units configured, corresponding to two, four, and six sets of test units respectively, which can support the simultaneous use of two, four, or six viscometers.

The system still features the JWC precision temperature control bath, a product of our 1990s national scientific research project, and continues to deliver consistent temperature fluctuations and distribution within ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring uniformity of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automated testing system will also feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid dispenser with a precision of 0.1% concentration, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-button dispensing).

Double-glazed vials with isolation design, ensuring the prepared solution dissolves rapidly and evenly in the precise, constant-temperature oscillating bath without interference from moisture.

Automatic liquid delivery system, no longer requiring manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive unit that automatically filters the solution and delivers it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic testing complete; the system will automatically extract waste liquid and wait for the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary flushing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of liquid injection - soaking - recovery - cleaning - drying, without the need for manual intervention.

1. System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, equipped with a variety of sensors and a central controller, can perform tests and also clean the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision thermostatic water baths for placement of test units, ensuring normal operating environmental temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional, manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Solvent Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with a double set of solvent bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding moisture interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Auto-Determination System, integrated into the central control system, enables the precise measurement of the time taken for the solution to flow through a capillary.

1.6 Sample Loader

Samples are dissolved in the solvent vials and placed here. After the system is activated for testing, the required solutions will be automatically filtered through a sand core filter and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various cleaning fluids. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines during the automatic testing. After cleaning, dry the unit.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with printers, keyboards, and monitors, etc.

2. Layout of the automatic viscosity measuring system

This automatic testing system is composed of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's arrangement, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

3.2 Rapid Dissolution of Sample

See WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), featuring a dissolution bottle with double-layered insulating sleeves.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be very lengthy, taking up to an hour or more, and requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate completion. Excessive heat can lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the influence of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with dedicated pressure sources for the injection, testing, transmission of washing fluid, and drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the varying solvent components of the samples and washing fluids.

Vacuum pressure adjustment method:

Two pressure gauges are located on the central control system panel: the constant pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the sample solution, and the pump pressure gauge adjusts and controls the working pressure of the washing solution.

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the mode button (left button), until "L" appears0-2, which shows the current lower limit of vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode key again to display H1After -2, it shows the current maximum vacuum level. Press the up and down keys to change the maximum set value.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent sample bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if rinsing is needed before testing, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at once. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, press the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (for rinsing) is in the liquid tube position, then the liquid tube descends and inserts into the volumetric flask, while the volumetric flask for testing automatically seals its mouth. After starting the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinse, and then automatically drain the liquid.

Continue holding the test button, another sample bottle is sent to the testing position, wait for the test to start. Test completed, the sample bottle returns to the starting position.

Wash Position: The suction tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the mouth of the rear beaker automatically covers it.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test completed, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent operations are performed automatically by the system. The operator can view the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues arise during the test.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges waste liquid before proceeding to the next test.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After a period of use, the viscometer should be cleaned.

Firstly, place a solution bottle in the washing position of the sampler (it can also be the test position), and the pipette will automatically insert to the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!).

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and clean water, as well as sufficient remaining space in containers for waste liquids and wastewater.

Then, the full cleaning-drying process can be initiated and completed.

Select "Wash Solution Soaking" on the computer interface, and the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Regularly monitor the liquid level in storage bottles. For waste liquid collection, timely cleanup is required when the level is high; for new liquid types, ensure timely replenishment.

Remove the cap with care to maintain its original condition; some may come with a layer of Teflon film to prevent corrosion. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's number and the corresponding entry marked on the bottle label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed for a proper seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction inlet maintains a vacuum (low pressure), it can cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction inlet. The machine has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, vacuum pump oil should be added to the oil gauge between the first and second marks in the suction inlet.
