The viscosity measurement system is a specialized, automated testing equipment designed for determining the intrinsic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and other properties of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is categorized as NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, with corresponding configurations of two, four, and six test units, respectively. This allows for simultaneous use by two, four, or six viscometers.

The system still retains the JWC precision temperature control baths, a result of our 1990s national scientific research projects, and will continue to offer long-term temperature fluctuations and distribution within ±0.01℃, ensuring consistent test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

Automated liquid preparation instrument with precision up to 0.1% concentration, capable of conveniently preparing sample solutions (one-button liquid preparation).

Double-layer glass isolation design of sample bottles ensures that the prepared solutions dissolve rapidly and uniformly in a precisely temperature-controlled oscillating bath, free from interference by water.

Automatic liquid delivery system, eliminating the need for manual feeding into the viscosity tube; a comprehensive device that automatically filters and delivers the solution into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automatic test completed; the system will automatically extract waste liquid and wait for the arrival of the next sample to automatically complete the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply initiate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of liquid introduction—immersion—recycling—cleaning—drying, without the need for manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe automatic viscosity measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 NCY Test Unit, equipped with various sensors and paired with a central controller, is capable of performing tests and tasks such as cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision temperature-controlled water baths for placement of test units, ensuring the units operate in a normal working environment temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Mixture Dispenser (optional accessory, instruction manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with a double set of sample dissolution bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding moisture interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Automatic Measurement System, integrated into the central control system, providing an accurate measurement of the time it takes for the solution to flow through the capillary.

1.6 Sample Inserter

Samples are dissolved in the dissolution vial and placed here. After the system initiates testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sand core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various cleaning fluids. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines used during the automatic testing. After cleaning, proceed with drying.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminal equipment.

2. Layout of Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automated testing system consists of several components, which can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's setup, but its fundamental principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as filling and emptying. The cover image illustrates a typical rational layout method.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must start from the central control system and gradually decrease, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Handling

3.1 Automatic Solution Preparation

3.2 Rapid Dissolution of Sample

See WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), equipped with a double-layered sleeve sample bottle.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be quite lengthy, taking one, even more, hours. It requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate completion. Excessive temperature will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under the influence of vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with different pressure sources specifically for the liquid introduction, testing, fluid transfer, and drying of the viscometer. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the solvent composition of the samples and cleaning fluids.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel: one for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the sample solution with a constant pressure gauge, and the other for regulating and controlling the working pressure of the washing fluid with a pump pressure gauge.

Vacuum pressure adjustment methods are as follows:

Press the mode key (left button), until "L" appears0-2 shows the current lower limit of the vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the mode key again to display H1After -2, the current upper limit of vacuum degree is displayed. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note: The vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, remove the solvent bottle containing the dissolved sample from the oscillator, pour half of its contents into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sample unit for injection.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if pre-washing is necessary before the test, you will need to prepare about 26mL of solution at a time. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, hold down the pre-wash key for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (for pre-washing) is in the position of the aspiration tube, then lower the aspiration tube to insert it into the volumetric flask, while the flask with the sample to be tested automatically seals the opening. After initiating the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the pre-wash, and automatically drain the liquid.

Continue holding the test button, another sample vial is sent to the testing station, waiting for the test to start. Once the test is complete, the sample vial is returned to the starting position.

Sample Solution Bottle Location

Wash Position: The liquid tube is inserted into the front beaker, and the mouth of the rear beaker automatically covers it.

Test Port: Insert the liquid tube into the vial at the back.

Test complete, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state, with subsequent operations handled automatically by the system. Operators can observe the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up when an issue is encountered during testing.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges the waste liquid before proceeding to the next test.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

After a period of use, the viscometer should be cleaned.

First, place a sample vial into the sampler's rinsing position (it can also be the testing position), and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!).

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and clean water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, you can initiate and complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

Select "Wash Solution Soaking Cleaning" on the computer interface, the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

Storage bottles require regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, timely cleaning is necessary when the level is high; for new liquid, it is important to replenish promptly.

Remove the cap with care, ensuring the original state is maintained. Some caps come with a PTFE film for corrosion prevention. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to note the tube's number and the corresponding entrance indicated on the label. When replacing the cap, make sure it is tightly sealed and properly sealed.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction inlet maintains vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction inlet. The machine has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level will also decrease. When the oil level in the pump side's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, add vacuum pump oil from the suction inlet to between the first and second graduation lines on the oil gauge.
