The viscosity measurement system is a specially designed and developed automated testing equipment for the characteristic viscosity, viscosity number, average molecular weight, and viscosity average molecular weight of polymers. Depending on the number of test units configured in the system, it is categorized as NCY-X/2, NCY-X/4, and NCY-X/6, corresponding to two, four, and six sets of test units, respectively, which can simultaneously accommodate two, four, or six viscometers.

The system still features the JWC precision temperature-controlled bath, a result of our 1990s national research project, and continues to deliver temperature fluctuations and distributions better than ±0.01℃ over extended periods, ensuring consistency of test data at any moment and location.

In addition, the automatic testing system will also feature the following new functions:

An automatic liquid dispenser with a precision of up to 0.1% for preparing sample solutions conveniently (one-button liquid preparation).

A double-layered glass isolation design beaker, allowing the prepared solution to dissolve rapidly and evenly in the jingque isothermal oscillating bath without interference from water.

Automatic Liquid Delivery System, eliminating the need for manual feeding of the viscosity tube, a comprehensive device that automatically filters the solution and delivers it into the capillary of the viscometer.

Automated testing is complete. The system will automatically extract waste liquid and await the arrival of the next sample to automatically perform the capillary rinsing and testing.

When cleaning capillaries is required, simply activate the cleaning program, and the system will autonomously complete the entire process of fluid injection—immersion—recycling—cleaning—drying, without any manual intervention.

System Structure

Ncy-xThe viscosity automatic measurement system consists of the following components:

1.1 The NCY test unit is equipped with a variety of sensors and is paired with a central controller, enabling it to perform tests and other tasks such as cleaning the capillary viscometer within the unit.

1.2 JWC series precision thermostatic baths for placement of test units, ensuring normal operating environmental temperature (instruction manual included).

1.3 PY Series Automatic Liquid Mixture Instrument (optional, manual included).

1.4 WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Constant Temperature Oscillator (optional, manual included), equipped with dual sample dissolution bottles, operates at precise temperatures while effectively avoiding moisture interference during operation.

1.5 NCY-X Viscosity Auto-Determination System, included in the central control system, performs a precise measurement of the time it takes for the solution to flow through a capillary.

Samples are dissolved in the dissolution vial and placed here. After the system starts testing, the required solution will be automatically filtered through a sintered core and sent to the capillary.

1.7 Cleaning System

Pre-set various cleaning solutions. Under the cleaning program for a specific unit in the central system, clean the unit's viscometer, filter, and all fluid lines used during the automatic test. Upon completion of cleaning, proceed with drying.

1.8 Commercial or industrial computers with a printer, keyboard, and monitor, etc., as terminals.

2. Arrangement of Automatic Viscosity Measurement System

This automated testing system consists of several components and can be arranged in various configurations according to the user's requirements, but its basic principle is:

2.1 Ensure all pipeline distances are as short as possible, while also considering actual operations such as adding and pouring liquids. The cover image shows a typical reasonable layout.

2.2 The pipeline connecting from the central control unit to the viscometer must only descend gradually from the central control system, without any rise in between.

3. Sample Processing

3.1 Automated Solution Preparation

See the PY Automatic Mixture Instrument manual (optional accessories).

3.2 Quick dissolution of samples

See WR-2 Rapid Sample Dissolution Oscillator manual (optional accessory), equipped with a double-layered sleeve sample bottle.

The dissolution process of the sample in the solvent can sometimes be quite lengthy, taking one or even more hours. It requires oscillation at as high a temperature as possible to accelerate completion. Excessive temperature will lead to degradation, so the temperature should be precisely controlled.

4. Vacuum Pressure Adjustment

The automatic testing system operates under vacuum pressure. This system is equipped with specialized pressure sources for the injection, testing, and transmission of cleaning fluid, as well as for drying. Different vacuum pressures need to be adjusted according to the solvent composition of the samples and cleaning fluid.

Vacuum Pressure Adjustment Method:

There are two pressure gauges on the central control system panel: one for adjusting and controlling the working pressure of the sample solution with a constant pressure gauge, and the other for regulating and controlling the working pressure of the washing liquid with a pump pressure gauge.

Vacuum pressure regulation methods are as follows:

Press the pattern key (left button), until it appears L0-2 shows the lower limit of the current vacuum setting. Press the up and down keys to adjust the upper limit setting.

Press the pattern key again to display H1After -2, the current upper limit of vacuum degree is displayed. Press the up and down keys to change the upper limit setting.

Note, the vacuum pressure value is negative.

5. Inlet and Testing

Prepare a clean empty solvent sample bottle, pour half of the solvent from the bottle containing the dissolved sample in the oscillator into the empty solvent bottle, and place them together in the corresponding sampling unit.

During testing, only approximately 13mL of sample is required. Therefore, if it's necessary to rinse before testing, you'll need to prepare about 26mL of solution at once. Place the solvent bottle on the autosampler, press the rinse button for the corresponding unit, and the solvent bottle holder advances. Stop when the previous solvent bottle (for rinsing) is in the position of the pipette. The pipette descends and inserts into the volumetric flask, while the flask's mouth is automatically sealed. After initiating the test, the testing system will automatically draw the solution from the solvent bottle, complete the rinse, and automatically drain the liquid.

Keep holding the test button, another sample bottle sent to the testing position, wait for the test to start. Test completed, the sample bottle returned to the starting position.

Washing position: The suction tube is inserted into a solvent bottle in front, and the opening of the solvent bottle behind automatically seals.

Test port: Insert the syringe into the vial at the back.

Test completed, solvent bottle returned to starting position.

After initiating the test program for this unit on the computer, the unit automatically enters the working state. The subsequent work is performed automatically by the system. The operator can view the progress of the unit's testing on the screen, and a dialog box will automatically pop up if any issues are encountered during the test.

Test completed, the system automatically discharges waste liquid and proceeds to the next test phase.

6. Capillary Viscometer Cleaning and Drying

Viscometers require cleaning after extended use.

Firstly, place a solvent sample vial into the rinsing position (or the testing position) of the sampler, and the pipette will automatically insert into the bottom of the bottle (this is very important!!)

Check and ensure there is an adequate supply of solvents like detergents and clean water. Verify that containers for waste liquids and wastewater have sufficient remaining space.

Then, the entire cleaning-drying process can be initiated and completed.

Select "Detergent Soak Cleaning" on the computer interface, and the viscometer can complete the entire cleaning-drying process.

7. Routine Maintenance

7.1 Liquid Storage Bottle

The liquid storage bottle requires regular monitoring of the liquid level. For waste liquid collection, it is necessary to clean up promptly when the level is high; for new liquid types, timely replenishment should be ensured.

When removing the bottle cap, note the original state of installation. Some may come with a layer of PTFE film, which is for addressing the issue of corrosion of the cap. When reinserting the plastic tube, be sure to pay attention to the tube's numbering and the corresponding entrance indicated on the bottle label. When replacing the cap, ensure it is tightly sealed and note the seal.

7.2 Vacuum Pump

This type of vacuum pump, when in use, if the suction inlet maintains vacuum (low pressure), it may cause the oil pump to spray oil outward from the suction inlet. This unit has been equipped with a special program in the control system to prevent oil spraying. However, after a considerable period of use, the oil level may also decrease. When the oil level in the pump side's oil gauge falls below the "min" mark, oil should be added to the suction inlet of the vacuum pump until it reaches between the first and second graduation lines on the oil gauge.
