Description

In China, the collected waste rechargeable batteries are manually sorted to separate nickel-cadmium batteries, waste nickel-hydrogen batteries, and lithium batteries. These are then individually packed into sturdy plastic drums. After sealing, the batteries are stored in a warehouse that is protected from rain, sun, fire, and theft. It is estimated that the collected waste batteries will need to be temporarily stored before they can be processed. The resource recycling of single-use dry batteries becomes profitable only when a certain quantity is reached. Currently, the waste battery disposal strategy is to landfill them in a hygienic and non-hazardous manner at a waste disposal site, and they will be retrieved for recycling once the technology is mature.


Battery recycling and the process of recycling and disposing of used batteries generally involves the following points:

1. Category: By smashing recycled batteries, we remove the zinc casing and the battery bottom iron, extracting the copper caps and graphite rods. The remaining black material consists of manganese dioxide and a mixture for the battery core. After collecting these materials separately and processing them, we can obtain some useful substances. The graphite rods, after being washed with water and dried, can be reused for electrical purposes.

2. Zinc granules production: After removing the zinc shell and washing it clean, place it in an iron pot. Heat and maintain the temperature for 2 hours. Remove the floating dross on top, pour out for cooling, then drip onto an iron plate. Wait until it solidifies to obtain zinc granules.

3. Copper Sheet Recycling: We can flatten the copper caps, wash them with hot water, then boil with a certain amount of 10% sulfuric acid for 30 minutes to remove the surface oxidation layer. After removing and washing, dry them to obtain copper sheets.

4. Recycling: We place the black material into the tank and then add 60°C warm water for stirring for an hour, which allows it to dissolve completely in the water. After settling, filtering, and washing the filter residue twice with water, we collect the mother liquor.

5. Manganese Dioxide Recycling: We wash the filtered sludge with water three times, then filter it. The cake is placed in a pot to dry, removing a little carbon and other impurities. It is then thoroughly stirred in water for 30 minutes, filtered again, and finally dried at 100-110oC. This process yields manganese dioxide.

Battery Recycling: What are the methods for recycling and utilizing used batteries?

1. The heat treatment method involves grinding the old batteries and sending them to the furnace for heating. At this point, the emitted Hg can be extracted; at higher temperatures, zinc also evaporates, which is also a precious metal. When iron and manganese are melted together, they form the manganese iron alloy required for steelmaking.

2. Wet Processing: In this wet processing facility, all types of batteries, excluding lead-acid batteries, are dissolved in sulfuric acid, and then various metals are extracted from the solution using ion exchange resins. The raw materials obtained through this method are purer than those from the heat treatment process, and thus command a higher market price. Moreover, 95% of the substances contained in the batteries can be extracted. Wet processing eliminates the need for sorting (since sorting is a manual operation, it increases costs).

3. Vacuum Heat Treatment Method: First, sort out nickel-cadmium batteries from the waste batteries. Heat the waste batteries in a vacuum, where Hg rapidly evaporates, allowing for its recovery. Then, grind the remaining materials and use a magnet to extract iron metal. Finally, extract nickel and manganese from the remaining powder. The cost of processing one ton of waste batteries is less than 1,500 marks (now approximately 6,345.18 yuan)!

Disposable batteries, when discarded in the environment, release acidic and alkaline electrolyte solutions that alter the pH of soil and water systems, causing them to become acidic or alkaline. Heavy metals like Hg and Cd, when absorbed by organisms, enter the human food chain through various routes, accumulate in the human body, and can lead to deformities or mutations, even causing death. A single button battery can contaminate 600,000 liters of water, equivalent to an individual's lifetime water consumption. Battery Recycling, Lithium-ion Battery Performance Features:

1. High open-circuit voltage: The individual battery voltage typically reaches 3.6V, which is three times that of a standard nickel-hydride or nickel-cadmium battery.

2. High Energy Density: Taking the UR18650 battery as an example, its energy density by mass and by volume is respectively up to 125Wh/kg and 300Wh/cm³.

7. Wide operating temperature range: -25 to +45°C; the operating temperature range can be expanded to -40 to +70°C if the thermal stability of the positive material and electrolyte can be improved.

8. Eco-friendly Chemical Energy: Lithium-ion batteries are free of pollutants and represent a highly environmentally friendly chemical energy storage device.

9. Long service life: With 80% discharge depth, the cycle life exceeds 1200 cycles; with a shallower discharge depth, the cycle count can reach over 5,000 cycles.

10. Enhanced processing flexibility allows for the production of various battery shapes, such as cylindrical and soft-pack. Consequently, lithium-ion secondary batteries offer significantly superior advantages compared to traditional secondary batteries.
