Sprocket shafts are a type of mechanical transmission, similar in function to flat keys, half-round keys, and wedged keys—they all transmit mechanical torque. They have longitudinal keyways on the shaft surface, and the rotating parts mounted on the shaft also have corresponding keyways, allowing for synchronized rotation with the shaft. Some can also slide longitudinally along the shaft, such as gear shift gears in a transmission.
