Overview of FDA Certification
Many companies' products are required to obtain FDA certification for the US market. When faced with the need for FDA certification, it's understandable that you all are eager to acquire it. However, understanding the process of obtaining FDA certification is essential. I have been responsible for FDA certification at BORY Certification Company for over a decade, with extensive experience in various types of FDA certifications. Let me now provide you with a detailed explanation of the FDA certification process.
What is FDA Certification?
This is a question that many people unfamiliar with FDA certification might ask. So, what is FDA certification? Many clients tell me they need FDA certification, but in reality, FDA certification is just a conceptual term. In actual practice, it's more accurate to refer to FDA registration and FDA testing, not FDA certification. Since the term "certification" is widely used in the export process, people often refer to FDA registration and FDA testing as FDA certification. However, it's important to clarify that FDA certification is just a commonly used term; we don't oppose this usage, but it's crucial to understand the relationship between FDA certification, FDA registration, and FDA testing.
What is FDA registration, and which companies and products does it mainly target?
The FDA registration is the process by which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) registers companies and product information for products entering the U.S. market. Its main purposes include anti-terrorism measures and restricting the entry of non-compliant products. The main types of businesses targeted for FDA registration include: food companies (including all edible products and animal feed), medical device companies and products, laser radiation companies and products, pharmaceutical companies and products, cosmetics, and tobacco. These types of businesses and products require FDA registration, and you can also refer to it as FDA certification.
What is FDA inspection, and what types of companies and products does it mainly target?
FDA inspections are conducted by the FDA for certain products that require testing to demonstrate compliance with specified requirements. The FDA establishes corresponding inspection regulations based on the intended use, actual use, and contact situations of different products. These tests are typically carried out by third-party laboratories with relevant testing capabilities, which generally do not need FDA authorization but must possess the necessary qualifications for testing (commonly referred to as CNAS recognition in China). Products commonly involving FDA inspections include food contact materials (i.e., materials that come into contact with food during production, processing, storage, and consumption must undergo FDA inspections to prove they do not contaminate food), followed by cosmetics (cosmetics must pass FDA inspections to prove they do not cause direct or potential harm to humans), and also certain products with uncertain performance parameters during the registration process, such as laser products requiring laser radiation level tests and sunglasses needing lens shatter tests, among others.
FDA Certification Process
You can review the products and companies mentioned above, considering the aforementioned information, to determine whether they align with your needs. From there, you can further decide whether you need to proceed with an FDA registration, an FDA inspection, both, or simply an FDA certification.
Below is a brief overview of the process for FDA registration and FDA inspections:
The FDA registration primarily involves a process of submitting and reviewing documents, typically resulting in a registration number. Naturally, to cater to the term "FDA certification," third-party companies often issue a form certificate based on the registration number. This certificate is not provided by the FDA itself and holds no legal validity. Its purpose is merely to visually display the FDA registration number and corresponding company information through an image, making it convenient for businesses to use and showcase.
The FDA testing primarily involves sending samples to a lab for testing. Upon completion, you will receive an FDA test report. This report compares the product's test data with the FDA's requirements to determine if the product meets FDA standards. You will receive only a test report, not a certification certificate.
