Poultry Farm Wastewater Treatment: Characteristics and Challenges
Poultry and livestock wastewater contains a high concentration of pollutants, such as organic matter, ammonia nitrogen, and heavy metals. Discharging it untreated not only severely pollutes surface water bodies, leading to eutrophication, but also damages soil, groundwater, and agricultural ecosystems. Under anaerobic conditions, such wastewater can also produce a large amount of臭气.
Solutions & Technical Processes
Poultry and livestock waste primarily consists of urine, some feces, and washwater from animal housing, making wastewater treatment challenging. Its characteristics are mainly as follows:
1. Primarily organic pollution, with biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, and solid suspended matter all significantly exceeding the national emission standards.
2. Good biodegradability, but high concentrations of organic matter are not easily decomposed.
3. Water quality and quantity vary greatly, exhibiting seasonal fluctuations and a fishy odor.

The aquaculture farm employs a "pretreatment + anaerobic treatment + aerobic treatment + biochemical treatment" process, which offers excellent treatment results and low equipment investment. A disinfection reinforcement system is also set up to enhance the effluent quality, ensuring that all effluent indicators meet the discharge standard requirements.
(2) During the winter operation of this project, the water volume entering the reaction system is smaller (50 m3/d), but the water temperature is lower. Appropriate measures must be taken to ensure the normal operation of the anaerobic reactor. Hot water coils can be installed inside the anaerobic reactor for heating, and the heat source of this system can supplement the heat for the anaerobic reactor during cold seasons, ensuring the water temperature within the reactor.
Processed Effect
The wastewater treatment system designed for this farm has excellent effluent quality, with the main water quality indicators meeting discharge standards. It can effectively adapt to fluctuating influent water quality, ensuring that the effluent reaches the standard for sewage discharge, and effectively addresses the actual situation of such wastewater. Based on the actual requirements and design process, the "pretreatment + anaerobic treatment + aerobic treatment + biochemical treatment" process adopted for this pig slaughtering plant is implemented to improve water quality, meet the effluent standard requirements, and ensure the long-term stable operation of the wastewater treatment system.
