Spline shafts are a type of mechanical transmission, serving the same function as flat keys, semi-circular keys, and wedged keys, all of which are used to transmit mechanical torque. They feature longitudinal keyways on the shaft surface, with rotating parts mounted on the shaft having corresponding keyways to ensure synchronized rotation. Some spline shafts can also slide longitudinally along the shaft, such as gear shift gears in a transmission.
