Insulators are categorized by installation method into suspension insulators and支柱insulators; by the type of insulating material used, they can be porcelain, glass, or composite (also known as synthetic) insulators; by voltage grade, they are classified as low-voltage or high-voltage insulators; and by environmental conditions, there are dirt-resistant insulators for polluted areas. Different voltage types lead to the development of DC insulators. Additionally, there are specialized insulators such as insulating crossarms, semiconductor glaze insulators, tension insulators for distribution use, spool insulators, and wiring insulators, among others. Furthermore, based on the likelihood of insulation breakdown, they can be divided into A-type insulators, which are non-breakdown, and B-type insulators, which can breakdown.
