A rack is a special type of gear with teeth distributed along a strip. Racks come in two types: straight teeth racks and helical racks, which are paired with straight teeth cylindrical gears and helical cylindrical gears, respectively. The profile of the rack's teeth is linear rather than involute (for the mating surface, it's a plane), equivalent to a cylindrical gear with an infinite pitch diameter.
