A rack is a special type of gear with teeth distributed along a strip. Racks come in straight and helical varieties, which are paired with straight and helical cylindrical gears, respectively; the teeth of a rack have a linear profile rather than a involute (flat for the mating surface), equivalent to a cylindrical gear with an infinite pitch circle radius.
