A rack is a special type of gear with teeth distributed along a strip. Racks come in straight and helical varieties, which are paired with straight and helical cylindrical gears, respectively; the teeth of a rack are straight lines rather than involutes (flat for the mating surface), akin to a cylindrical gear with an infinite pitch diameter.
