Advantages of Graphite Electrodes over Copper Electrodes
Graphite electrodes are advantageous due to their ease of processing, metal removal during EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), and minimal graphite wear. Consequently, an increasing number of mold factories are switching from copper electrodes to graphite electrodes. So, what are the specific advantages of graphite?
Graphite is one-fifth the density of copper, so it is five times lighter in weight for the same volume. Large electrodes made of copper are too heavy, which is highly detrimental to the accuracy of the EDM machine tool's spindle over long-term electrical spark operations. Graphite, however, is not affected and is also very safe to handle!
2. Graphite can be processed at a high speed, typically five times faster than ordinary metals. Moreover, selecting the right hardness of graphite can reduce wear and electrode损耗.
3. Graphite is easy to mold and does not deform, making it a practical choice for electrode shapes that are difficult to produce with copper. For instance, thin electrode shapes are prone to deformation during machining and EDM with copper, but graphite can achieve this with ease. Moreover, during EDM, graphite can withstand higher currents and processing speeds without the risk of deformation due to excessive heat, thereby preventing damage to the workpiece.
4. Graphite整形和抛光: Generally, polishing is not required for graphite after processing. This also reduces the precision error of electrodes after shaping and shortens the production cycle.
5. Graphite EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is fast with minimal wear. Since copper has a melting point of 1083°C and the temperature during EDM is around 1100°C, copper electrodes are relatively prone to wear and tear after EDM. Graphite, however, sublimates only at 3550°C. With proper processing parameters, graphite electrodes can achieve theoretical zero wear, thereby avoiding the need for repeated electrode machining.
6. In the design and programming of electrodes, the design of graphite electrodes differs. Many mold factories typically have different allowances for rough and finish machining of copper electrodes, whereas graphite electrodes can use the same allowance, which reduces the workload of/CAM and the number of machine operations. Just for this reason, it is enough to shorten the design and manufacturing cycle of molds, and also reduces the probability of errors during processing.
