Ammonium phosphate, also known as polyphosphoric acid ammonium, primarily contains ammonium pyrophosphate and ammonium tripolyphosphate, with tetrapolyphosphoric acid and longer-chain polyphosphates present in only small amounts. It is easily soluble in water, with a solubility greater than that of ammonium orthophosphate, and can also chelate metal cations, keeping them in solution.

Manufacture

Manufactured by the reaction of superphosphate with ammonia or by dehydration of ammonium orthophosphate. The 76% P2O5 hot phosphoric acid is neutralized with ammonia under conditions of 0.17～2.07 MPa and 185～215°C to produce ammonium polyphosphate containing 16%～18% nitrogen and 59%～61% phosphorus pentoxide, with 43% of the phosphorus pentoxide being orthophosphate, 54% being pyrophosphate, and 2%～3% being long-chain polyphosphates. The product obtained from wet-process phosphoric acid using preheated 54% phosphorus pentoxide contains 30% polyphosphate.

Usage

Ammonium polyphosphate, in addition to being an ingredient in various fertilizers, is a crucial chemical for extinguishing forest and mountain fires, as well as a fire-retardant dip for wood. The solution, made from superphosphate via the thermal process, containing 11% nitrogen and 37% P2O5, can be used as the basic chemical for extinguishing forest and mountain fires, and also as a fire-retardant dip for construction wood. The base solution, made from wet-process phosphoric acid, containing 10% nitrogen and 34% P2O5, can be used as a raw material for preparing various specifications of liquid compound fertilizers.
