Sandy Locust is a warm-weather, xerophytic shrub. In Tibet, it is commonly found on slopes at an altitude of 2,800 to 4,400 meters, in scrublands, sandy or rocky riverbanks, and often appears in large clusters in the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley. Sandy Locust can be propagated both by seeds and asexual means.
In the Tibet region, the sand槐 boasts excellent drought, cold resistance, waterproofing, and salt-tolerance properties. It is also an excellent soil and water conservation plant. Sand槐 can withstand high temperatures of up to 29℃ and low temperatures as low as -6℃. In deciduous shrublands, it often forms sand槐 associations, with an average height of no more than 50 centimeters. In deserts, the growth environment for sand槐 is favorable, and the plant's root system is also relatively intact. Due to its excellent soil and water conservation qualities, the seeds of sand槐 are plump and have vibrant colors, with good cold resistance.
Deciduous shrub with many branches. The canopy height is less than 50 cm, with dense, soft-haired small branches, ending in hard thorns. Leaves are 11-17, ovate, nearly leathery, covered with gray soft hair on both sides, 0.6-1.3 cm long; racemes are short, axillary on lateral branches, with a blue corolla, standard petal ovate or oblong, slightly notched at the tip, wing petal ovate-oblong; stamens fused 1/2-1/3, fruit slender, densely hairy, dehiscent. Flowering period: May to June.
Growing Environment
Primarily grows in valleys, terraces, dunes, cobblestone riverbeds, and dry stone slopes at altitudes of 3,000 to 4,200 meters.
Chinese Scholar Tree seedling fields should be selected on level terrain with good drainage and irrigation conditions, fertile soil, and thick soil or sandy loam. They can adapt to neutral, calcareous, and slightly acidic soil types. They can grow normally on slightly saline and alkaline soil (with a salt content of about 0.15%)1, but poor growth occurs in dry, barren, and waterlogged areas.
