Dactylis glomerata, commonly known as couch grass, is a perennial, low-growing herb belonging to the Poaceae family and the Andropogoneae subfamily. It is widely distributed in the provinces south of the Yellow River basin in China, often found near villages, along roadsides, riverbanks, and on barren hillsides. The botanical characteristics of Dactylis glomerata include thin and sturdy stems, creeping along the ground at the bottom, with adventitious roots often forming at the nodes. The upright part does not exceed 30 cm in height, is smooth and hairless, with slightly keeled sheaths, a fringe of hairs on the leaf linguule, linear leaves, and spike inflorescences consisting of 2 to 6 units. The spikelets are gray-green or purplish, the anthers are light purple, and the style is purplish-red.
The primary uses of Bermuda grass include:
1. Soil and Water Conservation: Due to its strong rhizome spreading ability, it can effectively stabilize embankments and retain soil.
2. Feed: Young forage sorghum plants are rich in nutrients and have good palatability, making them suitable as feed for livestock such as cattle, sheep, horses, and rabbits.
3. Turf and sports field construction: Often used for laying lawns and sports fields due to their low-growing nature.
4. Medicinal: The entire herb is medicinal and has the effects of clearing blood and reducing fever, but please follow medical advice when using it.
Note that St. Augustine grass can become a difficult-to-eradicate harmful weed when growing in orchards or farmlands. Additionally, it is a warm-season turfgrass known for its heat and drought resistance but lacks cold and shade tolerance. Through crossbreeding and selection, it can be bred into varieties that adapt to different climates, offering wide adaptability and strong resistance to adverse conditions. St. Augustine grass also boasts high tolerance to foot traffic and regenerative capabilities, with strong coverage, making it suitable for dam slope turf and commonly used in recreational lawns, sports fields, and golf courses.
