An environmental label is a mark placed on a product or its packaging, serving as the product's "certifying trademark." It signifies that not only does the product meet quality standards, but it also adheres to specific environmental protection requirements during production, use, and disposal. Compared to similar products, it boasts environmental advantages such as low toxicity, minimal harm, and resource conservation.
The China Environmental Label was established in response to the ideas of sustainable development proposed at the 1992 World Conference on Environment and Development and against the backdrop of the international environmental labeling movement. The National Environmental Protection Administration has always regarded promoting the environmental labeling system as one of the specific measures to implement the basic national policy of environmental protection, carry out the sustainable development strategy, and develop the circular economy. To date, the China Environmental Label has certified 56 categories of products in fields such as household appliances, office equipment, daily necessities, textile products, and building materials, with over 11,000 enterprises producing more than 21,000 varieties and specifications of products obtaining the China Environmental Label.
The goal of China's Environmental Labeling Program is: Firstly, to promote the sustainable development of the economy and society by fully utilizing the environmental labeling as a market economic tool, focusing on the national environmental protection objectives, contributing to the improvement of China's environmental quality, and aiding in environmental decision-making. Secondly, to embody the people-oriented philosophy, enhance public health protection, and guide scientific and green consumption. Then, to explore a dual green development model for Chinese enterprises, establish a green technology measure system in China, initiate the green economy, and make environmental labeling products the link between the public and sustainable development strategies, promote sustainable consumption, advance the development of a circular economy, and drive the construction of an environmentally friendly society.
