When the weld seam is broken, the crack surface of steel and nickel alloys may exhibit a blue oxidized appearance, indicating that they were formed while the welding metal was still hot.
Cracks form at the solidification boundary and exhibit characteristic interlimb structures. The morphology reflects the welding solidification structure, and there may be evidence of segregation related to the solidification boundary.
The primary cause of solidification cracking is that the weld bead strength during the solidification stage is insufficient to withstand the shrinkage stresses generated during the solidification of the molten pool. Factors that increase the risk include: inadequate weld bead size or shape, welding under high constraints, material characteristics such as high impurity content, or relatively larger shrinkage during solidification.

Representative special stainless steels include super stainless steel, which contains approximately 6% molybdenum, also known as 6-molybdenum stainless steel, with about a dozen steel grades worldwide; its main composition is 25Ni-23Cr-5.5Mo-0.2N. There's Inconel alloy, such as Inconel 800, with a composition of 32Ni-21Cr-Ti,Al; Inconel nickel alloy, such as Inconel 600, with a composition of 73Ni-15Cr-Ti,Al; Hastelloy alloy, such as C-276, with a composition of 56Ni-16Cr-16Mo-4W; and Monel alloy, such as Monel 400, with a composition of 65Ni-34Cu.
