Extend the lifespan of diesel generator sets
Diesel generators have a finite lifespan. How can you operate them to extend their lifespan? We've compiled some common practices that may be helpful to you.
1. Engine starting battery failure
Battery left unattended for extended periods, with electrolyte moisture evaporating without timely replenishment, no starting battery charger provided, the battery's charge decreases over time due to natural discharge, or the charger used requires manual periodic switching between equalizing/float charging. Neglecting to perform this switch operation leads to insufficient battery charge. To resolve this issue, in addition to using a high-quality charger, necessary testing and maintenance are essential.
2. Water entering the diesel engine
Due to condensation occurring in the air moisture with temperature changes, water droplets form and adhere to the inner wall of the oil tank, flowing into the diesel fuel. This causes the diesel to exceed the allowable water content, and such diesel entering the engine's high-pressure fuel pump can corrode the precision plunger components, potentially damaging the unit severely. Regular maintenance can effectively prevent this issue.
3. Oil Change Interval
The engine oil serves as a mechanical lubricant and has a certain shelf life. Over time, the physical and chemical properties of the oil can change when stored for extended periods, leading to deterioration in the lubrication condition during operation and increasing the likelihood of component damage in the machinery. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly change the lubricating oil.
4. Replacement Cycle for the Three Filters (Fuel Filter, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Water Filter): Filters play a crucial role in filtering diesel, engine oil, or water to prevent contaminants from entering the engine. Since oil and impurities are inevitably present in diesel, during the operation of the equipment, the filters are essential. However, these impurities and oil can accumulate on the filter mesh walls, reducing the filtering capacity of the filters. Excessive accumulation can lead to clogged oil passages, causing the oil machinery to shut down due to insufficient oil supply, akin to human suffocation. Therefore, during the operation of a normal generator set, we recommend: Replace the three filters for the regularly used units every 500 hours; replace the three filters for standby units.
5. Cooling System
Pumps, water tanks, and water supply pipes that have not been cleaned for a long time can lead to inefficient water circulation and reduced cooling performance. Issues such as the integrity of pipe joints, leaks in the water tank or channels, and if the cooling system is malfunctioning, can result in: 1. Poor cooling performance causing the water temperature inside the unit to rise excessively and shut down, a common issue with Wil逊 units; 2. Water leakage from the tank causing the water level to drop, which can also lead to the unit failing to operate normally (To prevent pipes from freezing when using the generator in winter, we recommend installing a water heater in the cooling system).
6. Lubrication Systems, Sealing Components
Due to the chemical properties of lubricants or oils and the iron shavings produced from mechanical wear, these not only reduce its lubricating effectiveness but also accelerate the damage to parts. Additionally, since lubricants have a certain corrosive effect on rubber seals, and the oil seals themselves age over time, reducing their sealing efficiency.
7. Fuel and Gas Distribution System
The engine's power output is primarily achieved through the combustion of fuel in the cylinder, which is ejected through the injector nozzle. This causes carbon deposits to accumulate on the nozzle as the fuel burns, and as the deposits increase, it affects the fuel injection amount. This leads to inaccurate timing of the injector's ignition angle, resulting in uneven fuel injection across the engine cylinders and an unstable operating state. Therefore, regular cleaning of the fuel system, replacement of the filter components to ensure smooth fuel supply, and adjustment of the valve timing for uniform ignition are necessary.
