The thickness of the wedge plate is a measure of the edge thickness compared to the average thickness of the steel strip or plate. We hope the steel parts will have some protrusions to pull them to the center of the rolling mill, allowing for rolling with higher stability. Rolling spring is a defect where the thickness of the rolled plate exceeds the required thickness, causing the roll to deflect due to high rolling forces, leading to elastic deformation of the mill. Using hard roll materials, such as rolls with high stiffness or elastic modulus, can avoid rolling spring, and the material has a high elastic modulus to reduce roll deformation.
It's challenging to maintain uniform gaps. Rolls deflect under the load required to deform steel components. Deflection causes the steel edges to become thinner and the center to become thicker, which can be overcome by using crown rolls. However, crown rolls only compensate for a set of conditions, particularly material, temperature, and deformation. Other methods to compensate for roll deformation include continuously altering crown. Another approach is to reduce the load, which can be achieved by applying crown rolls with longitudinal tension.
