The majority of marine ship's stern bearings are now replaced by oil-lubricated white metal bearings, which have replaced traditional water-lubricated bearings like iron plow wood. These bearings have a high oil film bearing capacity and excellent lubrication properties, especially with their sealing devices effectively preventing seawater and sand from entering the stern shaft tube, resulting in minimal wear and a relatively smooth and reliable operation of the main engine and shafting.
