Pistons complete four strokes during operation: intake stroke, compression stroke, combustion and power stroke (expansion), and exhaust stroke. When the piston moves downward, the intake valve opens, allowing fresh air filtered through the air filter to enter the cylinder, completing the intake stroke.

The piston moves upwards, both intake and exhaust valves are closed, compressing the air, which increases its temperature and pressure, completing the compression cycle. As the piston nears the top, the fuel injector sprays filtered fuel in a mist into the combustion chamber, where it mixes with the hot, high-pressure air and ignites spontaneously, burning. The resulting high pressure pushes the piston downward to perform work, rotating the crankshaft and completing the power stroke.

After the power stroke is complete, the piston moves from bottom to top, the exhaust valve opens to expel exhaust, and the exhaust stroke is completed. Each stroke rotates the crankshaft half a turn. After several working cycles, the diesel engine gradually accelerates into operation under the inertia of the flywheel.
