Detailed Classification of Waterborne Polyurethane
Due to the diversity of polyurethane raw materials and formulations, it has taken approximately 40 years to develop waterborne polyurethane. In Zhejiang, many preparation methods and formulations have been researched. Waterborne polyurethane comes in a wide variety and can be classified in multiple ways.
1. Categorized by appearance
Waterborne polyurethane includes polyurethane, polyurethane dispersion, and polyurethane aqueous solution. The most commonly used in practice are polyurethane and dispersion, which this book refers to as waterborne polyurethane or polyurethane.
2. By form of use
Water-based polyurethane adhesives can be divided into two categories based on their form of use: single-component and two-component types. Those that can be used directly or achieve the desired performance without a cross-linking agent are called single-component water-based polyurethane adhesives. If the required performance cannot be achieved when used alone, a cross-linking agent must be added; or in cases where the addition of a cross-linking agent to a single-component water-based polyurethane improves the bonding performance, the main agent and the cross-linking agent together form a two-component system.
3. Based on the properties of hydrophilic groups
Based on whether the polyurethane molecule contains ionic groups on the side chain or main chain, i.e., whether it belongs to ionic polymer (ionomer), waterborne polyurethane can be categorized into anionic and cationic types.
