What are the applications of ultrafiltration equipment?
1. Wastewater recycling utilization
Some Western countries have previously used certain methods to treat wastewater, but the results were not very effective, and it did not fundamentally treat it thoroughly. Moreover, the relatively low price of ultrafiltration equipment provides a strong condition for wastewater recycling and reuse. In fact, wastewater discharged from urban sewage treatment plants and factories can be reused after treatment. However, such practices are difficult to gain trust from Western users. Windhoek once used membrane technology to recycle the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant for drinking water.
2. Surface Water Treatment
Ultrafiltration equipment is predominantly used for surface water treatment, with the treated water being utilized for irrigation or as feedwater for reverse osmosis systems to produce industrial water. This type of factory is increasing in numbers in places like the Netherlands. This technique provides the advantage of accessing surface water locally without the need to purchase increasingly expensive drinking water.
3. Potable Water Treatment
With the improvement of living standards, people's demands for drinking water quality have increased accordingly. Water treatment companies focus on controlling the amount of microorganisms in the water supply network. To achieve this, one method is to stop the expensive and frequent water quality tests, or to set up barriers at the water supply terminals to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering. By using a UF system, such barriers can be easily constructed. The bacteria removal rate of the ultrafiltration membrane can reach 6log, and the virus removal rate can reach 4log, so neither water plants nor users need to worry about bacteria and viruses. Since the quality of drinking water is already very high, the membrane system can operate at a high membrane flux, reaching 135 liters/square meter/hour. Additionally, with higher incoming water quality, the frequency of backwashing and the need for chemical enhanced backwashing can be significantly reduced. If necessary, a secondary ultrafiltration unit can be installed to further recycle the first-stage backwash water.
4. Seawater Desalination
The Middle East region is a place severely lacking in water capital. To address this issue, people in the past often resorted to distillation techniques. Since the 1860s, membrane technology has been used to tackle water scarcity in these countries. However, many reverse osmosis seawater desalination systems (which use semi-permeable membranes to desalinate seawater for production) are facing severe membrane contamination issues. This is primarily because the traditional pretreatment methods for reverse osmosis systems cannot provide reliable feedwater quality. Therefore, most desalination plants operate far below their designed output, with some plants achieving less than 30% of their designed output. Research on small-scale desalination units shows that ultrafiltration systems can provide high-quality feedwater for reverse osmosis systems based on the controllable quality of seawater. Prolonged experiments also indicate that the SDI value of the effluent from ultrafiltration systems can be well controlled below 2. These tests do not require any pretreatment before the ultrafiltration system (also known as ultrafiltration equipment) and are applicable to various seawater qualities.
