Design and functionality

The SIMATIC Thin Client is a low-cost operator station that can be used with SIMATIC PANEL or Panel P and large equipment. As remote operator terminals, they can also be used directly with SCADA at HMI connections and machine sites, in offices, or elsewhere. Their installation holes and design are compatible with the Multi Panels of the SIMATIC Thin Clients that are operated via touchscreens or external keyboards or mice connected to USB interfaces.
The SIMATIC Thin Client communicates with the host (SIMATIC PANEL, industrial PC, or server) either through WinCC flexible's SmartAccess option (screen capture on the client panel) or Microsoft's standard RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), thus requiring no installation, license, or additional software for the unit itself.
The large distance between the host can be bridged with low-cost Ethernet. The SIMATIC Thin Client requires only one IP address. No local software installation or configuration is needed. The host provides the display and user interface. Therefore, the client does not require backup, recovery, or update measures. The total cost of ownership is correspondingly lower.
As a remote operator terminal without a hard drive or fan, this device can run on machines with high mechanical reliability requirements (such as vibration resistance requirements). The IP65-rated 15-inch PRO model can also be mounted on a support arm and base.
HMI applications such as WinCC or WinCC flexible, as well as office applications like MS Excel or SAP, can be directly operated on the SIMATIC Thin Client at the machine site via RDP connection. Unlike Microsoft CE office Viewers, this data is writable. RDP is a standard protocol supporting all Windows operating systems.
The SIMATIC Thin Client can be integrated into PROFINET/Ethernet networks. Alternatively, it can be connected point-to-point to the host via Ethernet cables. The crossover distance can reach up to 100 m (even longer for switches). This outperforms a conventional monitor connected via USB/DVI.
