Ductile iron pipes are essentially spheroidal graphite cast iron pipes, as spheroidal graphite cast iron pipes possess the essence of iron and the properties of steel, hence the name. Ductile iron pipes are forged using continuous casting and water-cooled centrifugal forging methods, with the latter being a modern technique. Compared to the traditional casting process, the water-cooled method not only maintains the corrosion resistance of gray cast iron pipes but also offers high strength, excellent toughness, thin walls, light weight, impact resistance, good bending properties, and ease of installation. It has also been successfully implemented domestically. In many regions of China, ductile iron pipes are used for medium and small diameter pipe connections, employing socket-and-spigot or flange-type interfaces; ductile iron pipes allow for limited angles and must possess superior seismic resistance and sealing properties.

Ductile iron pipes can be classified based on the wall thickness grade coefficient K or the allowable working pressure C. When classified based on the allowable working pressure C, sizes from DN1000 and above should be classified based on the wall thickness grade coefficient K. The specific wall thickness and allowable pressure for self-anchoring joints are provided by the manufacturer.

Flexible interface components are denoted by a letter "C" added in front of 10 times the PFA (Permitted Working Pressure) when classified according to the working pressure allowed. For instance, if the PFA is 4Mpa, the pressure class is 0.

Ductile iron pipes are cast using methods similar to other industrial castings, representing a type of cast iron pipe material. Regarding dimensions like standard length and wall thickness, many workshop-level factories produce products with K9 standard length of 6.15M, K8 at 6M, and wall thickness starting from DN100, all slightly thinner. In the domestic market, domestic water companies and fire engineering projects generally opt for K9 grade ductile iron pipes.

How to improve the performance of ductile iron pipes? Currently, gray cast iron or ductile iron castings often exhibit white mouth on the surface or thin-walled sections due to rapid cooling during the casting process, making the cast iron unsuitable for machining.

To eliminate the decrease in hardness of white cast iron, these cast iron pieces are typically heated from room temperature to above the eutectoid temperature, and then held for 1 to 2 hours to cool and anneal. The cementite decomposes into graphite, and the cast iron pieces are then slowly cooled and removed for air cooling.

.During the casting process, ductile iron pipes tend to have a higher white mouth tendency compared to gray iron, and higher internal stress, making it difficult to achieve a pure ferrite or spheroidizing matrix in cast iron components. To improve the ductility or toughness of cast iron parts, they are often heated to 900-950°C and held at this temperature for an adequate period to undergo high-temperature annealing, followed by air cooling to 600°C. If the as-cast structure consists of the matrix and spheroidal graphite, to enhance toughness, the cementite in the spheroidizing structure is decomposed into ferrite and spheroidal graphite. For this purpose, the ductile iron pipe components are reheated to 700-760°C near the eutectoid temperature, held at this temperature, and then air cooled to 600°C for cooling. To improve the overall performance of cast iron components, the annealing of ductile iron pipes to enhance toughness, and the normalization, quenching, and other heat treatment processes to increase the strength of ductile iron.
