Channel steel is a long strip steel with a concave cross-section, classified as construction and machinery carbon structural steel. It is a type of steel with a complex cross-section, characterized by its concave shape. Channel steel is primarily used in building structures, curtain wall projects, machinery and equipment manufacturing, and vehicle production.

The material used for producing channel steel should have good welding, riveting properties, and comprehensive mechanical properties. The raw steel billets for producing channel steel are carbon structural steel or low-alloy steel billets with carbon content not exceeding 0.25%. The finished channel steel is delivered after hot working shaping, normalizing, or hot rolling. The specifications are indicated in millimeters as waist height (h) * leg width (b) * waist thickness (d), such as 100*48*5.3, which represents a channel steel with a waist height of 100mm, leg width of 48mm, and waist thickness of 5.3mm, also known as 10# channel steel. For channel steels with the same waist height but different leg widths and waist thicknesses, the model numbers are distinguished by adding a, b, c, etc., such as 25#a, 25#b, 25#c, etc.

Channel steel is divided into standard and light channel steel. The specifications for hot-rolled standard channel steel range from 5 to 40. The specifications for hot-rolled alternative channel steel, supplied by agreement between both parties, range from 6.5 to 30. Channel steel is mainly used in building structures, vehicle manufacturing, other industrial structures, and fixed cabinets, and is often used in conjunction with I-beams.

Channel steel is further categorized into four shapes: cold-formed equal-width channel steel, cold-formed unequal-width channel steel, cold-formed internal curled edge channel steel, and cold-formed external curled edge channel steel.
