Industrial robots are multi-jointed mechanical arms or multi-degree-of-freedom devices designed for industrial applications. In the mid to late 1940s, research and invention of robots garnered more attention. After the 1950s, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S. began studying remote-controlled manipulators capable of handling nuclear materials, as shown in Figure 0.2. This is a master-slave control system where the master manipulator's movements are controlled. The system incorporates force feedback, allowing the operator to know the magnitude of the applied force. A protective wall separates the master and slave manipulators. Operators can effectively monitor the slave manipulator through observation windows or closed-circuit television. In 1962, the control methods of some industrial robots in the United States were roughly similar to those of CNC machine tools, but their appearance was mainly composed of human-like hands and arms.
