The granulator, also known as a slag collector, is an essential piece of equipment for cleaning the steam system of newly installed or reheat turbine units. It prevents damage to turbine blades caused by debris left in the steam system during manufacturing, transportation, storage, and construction, as well as rust accumulated within the pipes, thereby ensuring the safety and economic operation of the unit.
The cleaning of steam systems was traditionally done in stages. To prevent dirt from the superheater system from entering the reheater, the superheater system is cleaned first. Steam flushing of the pipes is mandatory before the unit starts up to ensure the safe operation of the turbine equipment. After the temporary blowdown control valve, a particle collector is installed to remove industrial waste from the pipes, thereby preventing the waste from entering the related systems.
