Polycarbonate (PC) is commonly referred to as a type of plastic material, which is a high molecular polymer containing ester groups. It can be categorized into various types such as aliphatic, aromatic, and aliphatic-aromatic based on the structure of the ester group. Polycarbonate is a polymer of carbonic acid, and while carbonic acid itself is unstable, its derivatives (such as phosgene, urea, carbonates, and esters) are relatively stable. Depending on the alcohol structure, polycarbonate can be divided into aliphatic and aromatic types. Aliphatic polycarbonate, such as polyethylene carbonate and polytrimethylene carbonate, and their copolymers, have low melting and glass transition temperatures, poor strength, and are not suitable for structural applications. However, due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability, they can be used in drug sustained-release carriers, surgical sutures, and bone support materials. Nevertheless, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is relatively cheaper than polycarbonate and can be produced into large-scale devices through bulk polymerization.
