Hydropower gate structures are civil engineering works that cutoff water from reservoirs or rivers. They consist of an inlet channel and an upper structure. The inlet channel includes an approach section, a gate section, and a transition section. A trash rack is located at the leading edge of the approach section. The gate section features an emergency gate and a maintenance gate. In the event of an accident, the emergency gate can close in moving water to cutoff the water flow, ensuring the safe operation of the hydropower plant. Emergency gates that can close quickly are known as rapid closure gates. The emergency gates are opened in still water after upstream and downstream equalization. The operation of the maintenance gates, located upstream, also requires still water conditions. The upper structure of the intake has a gate operating mechanism and cleaning equipment. The tailwater gate of the hydropower plant primarily serves to prevent sudden floods or other causes from causing the river water level to exceed the tailwater level, leading to backflow of tailwater into the plant, which could result in flooding accidents. The likelihood of using the tailwater gate is not high in normal circumstances.
