38DL PLUS Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge: Advanced Performance, Easy Operation; Typical Applications of 38DL PLUS
This portable thickness gauge is effectively suitable for nearly all ultrasonic thickness measurement applications and is fully compatible with almost all dual crystal and single crystal probes. The feature-rich 38DL PLUS thickness gauge is applicable for a variety of uses, including measuring wall thinning of pipe fittings with inner wall corrosion using dual crystal probes, as well as performing highly precise wall thickness measurements on thin-walled or multilayer materials using single crystal probes.
Corrosion Thickness Measurement
The main application of the 38DL PLUS thickness gauge is to measure the remaining thickness of corroded or eroded pipes, fittings, boxes, pressure vessels, casings, and other structures. Dual crystal probes are commonly used in these applications.

Penetration Coating Thickness Measurement
The 38DL PLUS ultrasonic thickness gauge can accurately measure the remaining wall thickness of metal pipelines and tanks through paint layers or similar coatings. Utilizing echo-to-echo and THRU-COAT measurement technology, along with Olympus dual-crystal probes, the gauge can calculate the thickness of the metal inner wall by subtracting the paint layer thickness from the measured value.
Measure the actual thickness of metal using a single bottom surface echo. This technique can separately display the thickness of the metal and the coating. Both thicknesses are adjusted according to their respective correct material sound velocities. Therefore, there is no longer a need to subtract the surface paint and coating to measure the metal thickness. The coating penetration measurement technology employs D7906-SM, D7906-RM, and D7908 dual crystal probes.

High Temperature Thickness Measurement
Material temperature variations can affect the accuracy of sound speed and thickness measurements. Users can manually input the temperature value of the calibration specimen and the actual (high) temperature during measurement using the temperature compensation feature. The 38DL PLUS automatically displays the thickness values corrected for temperature.
The 38DL PLUS ultrasonic thickness gauge with temperature compensation capability can measure the thickness of specimens up to 500°C. Consequently, routine testing and inspection of in-service equipment can be completed without the need for costly downtime.

Oxide Layer/Deposition Measurement
Steam boiler tubes, when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods, are prone to form iron oxide on the tube walls, which can reduce the lifespan of the tubes, decrease the efficiency of the boiler, and lead to more severe issues.
The 38DL PLUS employs advanced algorithms to measure the thickness of the oxidation layer/deposits on the inner wall of boiler pipe fittings. The thickness gauge simultaneously displays both the metal base thickness of the boiler pipe fitting and the thickness of the oxidation layer. Knowing the thickness of the oxidation layer/deposits can predict the lifespan of the pipe fitting. It is recommended to use the M2017 or M2091 probe for this application.

Encoding B Scan
B-Scan is a two-dimensional image that, by analyzing corrosion or pitting areas in materials such as pipeline, tank bottom plates, and side walls, enables inspectors to gain in-depth understanding of the material being tested. It corresponds to the transmission of ultrasonic pulses to generate a B-Scan. The reception method is the same as for A-Scan, but differs in that the probe can move in a straight line rather than remaining in a fixed position.

Plastic Products and Containers
The 38DL PLUS ultrasonic thickness gauge can measure the wall thickness of plastic products and containers non-destructively, completing critical testing applications in many manufacturing processes. For instance, if the material is too thin, it may not be usable. If it's too thick, manufacturers might waste funds on excess resin. It can perform single-layer and/or multi-layer measurements on up to four layers, with each layer's measurement taking just a few seconds. The measured values can be recorded in the gauge's data recorder for data analysis and documentation purposes.

Graphite Nodule Ratio/Elastic Modulus in Cast Iron
The method for quickly and non-destructively assessing cast iron (manufactured by mixing carbon, silicon, and other additives into molten iron) is ultrasonic testing. Olympus' 38DL PLUS thickness gauge can directly display the sound velocity readings of cast iron or other materials on the screen based on the input thickness value.

Furthermore, calculations based on the sound velocity and material density measured by the 38DL PLUS thickness gauge can determine whether the material exhibits characteristics such as homogeneity, isotropy, and non-dispersiveness. Measurable materials include common metals, industrial ceramics, and hard plastics, such as polystyrene and acrylic.
Cylinder bore measurement
The 38DL PLUS instrument can measure the wall thickness and dimensions of castings and cylinder bores in cars and internal combustion engines.

Ceramics and glass
The 38DL PLUS instrument is ideal for precise wall thickness measurement of commercial glass products. Measurable items include bottles, containers, bulbs, and scientific glassware, as well as most structural and electronic ceramic components (including coatings and substrates).

Soft隐形Contact Lenses
The 38DL PLUS thickness gauge helps manufacturers ensure that the shape and thickness of soft contact lenses meet prescription requirements, providing users with high-quality contacts.

Silicone coating on insulators
The 38DL PLUS thickness gauge can measure the thickness of organic silicon coatings on high-voltage insulators non-destructively.

Glass fiber/composite materials and gel coatings
The 38DL PLUS instrument can non-destructively measure the digital thickness of glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), gel coatings, and total wall thickness (gel coating and glass fiber) to ensure these materials meet the minimum thickness specifications.

Aircraft windows and composite materials
The 38DL PLUS instrument measures the thickness of aircraft windows and composite materials, detects material lamination, and plays a crucial role in aircraft quality control.

Small diameter tube
The 38DL PLUS instrument can measure small-diameter tubes used in industrial and medical applications.

Rubber conveyor belts, hoses, and pipes
The 38DL PLUS instrument measures the total thickness of conveyer belts, the depth of fabrics, the thickness of the steel cord reinforcement layer in rubber conveyer belts, as well as the wall thickness of rubber hoses or flexible tubes, playing a crucial role in the quality control process.

Turbine blades
Precision thickness gauges are commonly used for measuring turbine blades. The wall thickness of hollow turbine blades in aircraft engines can be measured using a small focused probe, which can detect core displacement during manufacturing and wear during operation.

Sonopen Transducer
The Olympus Sonopen probe is a single crystal probe shaped like a pencil, featuring a very thin delay block at one end. The unique shape of the Sonopen provides a reliable measurement solution for many challenging thickness gauging applications, such as measuring concave surfaces, fine wires, and insulating sheaths.
