Thickness measurement of metal materials subject to internal corrosion

A primary application of the 38DL PLUS thickness gauge is to measure the remaining thickness of corroded or eroded pipes, pipe fittings, casings, pressure vessels, shells, and other structures. Double crystal probes are frequently used in these applications.

Penetrating Coating Technology

Measure the actual thickness of metal using a single-bottom surface echo. This technique can separately display the thickness of the metal and the coating. Both thicknesses are adjusted according to their respective correct material sound velocities. Therefore, there is no need to subtract the surface paint and coating when measuring the thickness of the metal. The coating-penetrating measurement technology uses D7906-SM, D7906-RM, and D7908 double crystal probes.

Temperature Compensation

Material temperature variations can affect the accuracy of sound velocity and thickness measurements. Users can manually input the temperature value of the calibration specimen and the actual (high) temperature during measurement using the temperature compensation feature. The 38DL PLUS automatically displays the thickness value after temperature correction.

Oxide Layer/Deposition Measurement (Optional)

The 38DL PLUS utilizes advanced algorithms to measure the thickness of the oxidation layer/deposits on the inner wall of boiler pipe fittings. The thickness gauge simultaneously displays the thickness of the metal base and the oxidation layer of the boiler pipe fitting. Knowing the thickness of the oxidation layer/deposits can predict the lifespan of the pipe fitting. It is recommended to use the M2017 or M2091 probe for this application.

V Path Creation Feature

Users can utilize this new feature pending patent approval to create a custom V-path compensation curve for almost any dual crystal probe. This curve is also saved and retrieved simultaneously when most custom settings for dual crystal probes are saved and called.

Users simply calibrate and input known thickness values (minimum of 3 calibration points; up to 10 calibration points), and the instrument will create a V-path compensation curve.

Automatic probe recognition

All standard dual crystal probes are equipped with automatic probe identification functionality. This feature automatically invokes default V-path correction for each different type of probe.

Measure thickness of plastic, metal, composite materials, glass, rubber, and ceramic materials

Users can precisely measure the thickness of metals, plastics, composites, glass, ceramics, and other materials with single crystal probes. We offer a variety of single crystal probes with different frequencies, diameters, and interface types. With the high-resolution software option, users can achieve thickness measurements with an accuracy of 0.001 millimeters.

• For all probes, the standard resolution is 0.01 millimeters.

• In the case of a single crystal probe with a frequency range of 2.25 MHz to 30 MHz, the high-resolution software option can display measurement values with a resolution up to 0.001 millimeters.

• High-penetrating software options for measuring materials with high attenuation, such as fiberglass, rubber, and thick castings.

• Multi-layer software options enable simultaneous measurement of up to 4 different layer thicknesses.

• Measure thickness, sound velocity, or transit time.

• The auto-dial app with default and customizable settings simplifies thickness measurement.

High-penetrating software options

Users can utilize this option to measure thicker materials or those with high acoustic attenuation, such as rubber, fiberglass, castings, and composite materials, even when using low-frequency single crystal probes (as low as 0.5 MHz).

Multi-layer Software Options

This software option calculates and simultaneously displays the thickness measurements of up to 4 different layers.

This feature also displays the total thickness of the selected layers. Typical applications include thickness measurements for barrier layers in plastic fuel tanks, preforms for bottles, and soft contact lenses.
