Figs (scientific name:FicuscaricaLinn.) is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Ficus genus, characterized by its many-branched structure, small, ovate leaflets with irregularly钝 teeth along the edges; the fruits grow in the leaf axils, shaped like pears, turning purple or yellow upon ripening; although figs have flowers, their inflorescence is an umbellate one, hiding the flowers within the fruit. The edible part commonly consumed is the flower of the fig, and wild fig trees are pollinated only by the accompanying榕小蜂 (Ficus wasp). [10]
Figs originated along the Mediterranean coast, introduced to China during the Tang Dynasty from Persia. Now, they are cultivated in both the north and south, with a higher concentration in southern Xinjiang. They thrive in warm, humid climates, are tolerant of poor soil and drought, and prefer deep, loose, fertile, and well-drained loamy soil. This species boasts a variety of cultivars, with common types including Brandywine, Peking plum, and green peel. Figs yield high production with few pests and diseases, making them one of the faster fruit trees to bear fruit.
