(II) Countermeasures for the Safety Protection of Mechanical Transmission Mechanisms
Common transmission mechanisms on machine tools include gear meshing mechanisms, belt drive mechanisms, and couplings, etc. It is necessary to protect the dangerous parts of the transmission mechanisms.
Safety measures generally fall into three categories: direct (during design), indirect (protection devices), and directive (safety regulations, signage).
Safety Protection for Gear Drives. Gear drive mechanisms must be equipped with full-closure protective devices; no use without a protective cover.
Safety Protection for Belt Drive. The guard for the belt drive unit can be a protective mesh with a metallic frame; protection for the belt drive mechanism can be achieved by fully covering the belt, or by using guardrails.
Safety Protection for Couplings. The safety requirement for couplings is the absence of protruding parts, i.e., the use of safety couplings; the fundamental solution is to add a protective guard, with the most common being the Ω-shaped guard.
