In traditional power systems, electrical equipment with linear impedance characteristics does not interfere with the standard sine waveform of the power supply at 50Hz. However, with the rapid development of modern power electronics technology, electrical equipment with nonlinear impedance characteristics (also known as nonlinear loads) is increasingly used. These nonlinear loads cause distortion in the power system's supply frequency and waveform, from which different frequency sine waves can be extracted. This portion of extracted AC sine waves that are not 50Hz is collectively referred to as harmonics. The harmonic with a frequency three times that of 50Hz, or 150Hz, is called the 3rd harmonic; the harmonic with a frequency five times that of 50Hz, or 250Hz, is called the 5th harmonic; and the harmonic with a frequency seven times that of 50Hz, or 350Hz, is called the 7th harmonic.

Application Scenario
LED energy-saving lamps, LED displays, chargers, heaters, inverters, sterilizers, and PC terminals with single-phase two-tube rectification nonlinear loads generate significant odd-order harmonic currents during operation. The 3rd harmonic is the largest, being the primary harmonic component, with the 5th, 7th, 11th harmonics also notably high. However, the 3rd harmonic current does not vectorially cancel out most of the way on the neutral line like the fundamental and 5th, 7th, 11th harmonic currents do. Instead, it is completely superimposed on the neutral line at a 360-degree vector angle, resulting in the 3rd harmonic current on the neutral line being about three times that on the phase line. Therefore, when the 3rd harmonic current content of a single-phase rectification load reaches over 35%, the neutral line current becomes abnormally high, exceeding the phase line current. In many cases, the neutral line current becomes about twice the phase line current, causing various hazards to the low-voltage distribution system. The main phenomena include the following aspects:
1) Overcurrent in the neutral wire causes overheating: This leads to cable heating, aging, and fracturing, which not only directly damages electrical equipment but also easily triggers fire hazards that are difficult to inspect and control.
2) Abnormal tripping due to distribution protection: Even if the load on the line has not reached the designed capacity of the distribution system, a zero sequence protection trip may occur, leading to instability in the distribution system and affecting normal power supply.
3) Transformer Overheating and Abnormal Noise: A large amount of neutral harmonic current returns to the transformer, directly causing the transformer to overheat, generate noise, accelerate the degradation of transformer performance, shorten its lifespan, and in severe cases, directly leading to transformer burnout.
4) Significant Power Waste: The distribution system contains significant triple-frequency odd harmonic currents, which directly increase the electrical consumption of both load and power supply equipment, endangering the safe operation of reactive compensation equipment, leading to considerable power waste.
