    What are the different types of grinding methods for flat grinding machines?

    During flat grinding, workpieces can be mounted on a rectangular worktable that moves in reciprocating linear motion, or on a circular worktable that rotates in a circular motion. When using peripheral grinding with abrasive wheels, the grinding machine's spindle is arranged in a horizontal layout; when using face grinding with abrasive wheels, the spindle is arranged in a vertical layout.

    Based on the combination of the main axis layout and the shape of the workbench, general flat grinding machines can be divided into the following categories:

    One,卧轴矩台式平面磨床 - Bedway Miter Slab Planer

    In this machine tool, the workpiece is held by a rectangular electromagnetic worktable. The abrasive wheel performs a rotating main motion, the worktable a longitudinal reciprocating motion, and the abrasive wheel carriage an intermittent vertical cutting-in motion and horizontal feed motion.

    Two: Vertical Spindle Round Table Planer Grinding Machine

    On this machine, the abrasive wheel performs a rotating main motion, the circular worktable rotates for circular feed motion, and the abrasive wheel holder makes intermittent vertical cutting-in motion.

    Three: Vertical Spindle Miter Slab Planer

    On this machine, the abrasive wheel performs a rotating main motion, the rectangular worktable executes longitudinal reciprocating motion, and the abrasive wheel carriage makes intermittent vertical cutting-in motion.

    Four:卧轴圆台式平面磨床 - Bed-type circular cross-table planer grinding machine

    On this machine, the abrasive wheel performs the main rotational motion, while the circular worktable rotates for circular feed movement. The abrasive wheel carriage executes continuous radial feed motion and intermittent vertical cutting movements. Additionally, the rotation centerline of the worktable can be adjusted to an inclined position for the grinding of conical surfaces.

    Double-end face grinder

    Grinding two parallel planes of a workpiece simultaneously with an abrasive wheel end mill featuring two grinding heads, available in horizontal and vertical shaft configurations. The workpiece is guided through the wheel by a linear or rotary feeding device. This type of grinding machine boasts high power, making it suitable for mass production of components such as bearing rings and piston rings.

    Among these flat grinding machines, those using abrasive disc face grinding are more productive compared to those using rim grinding. This is due to the larger diameter of the abrasive disc for face grinding, which allows for simultaneous grinding of the entire width of the workpiece, resulting in a larger grinding area. However, during face grinding, the abrasive disc and workpiece surface are in arc-shaped line or surface contact, leading to a larger contact area, difficulty in cooling, and poor chip ejection. Consequently, the machining accuracy and surface roughness are slightly inferior.

    The round-tower planer is slightly more productive than the rectangular-tower planer, as the former features continuous feeding, whereas the latter incurs directional change losses. Additionally, the round-tower planer is suitable only for grinding small parts and the end surfaces of large-diameter annular parts, but not for long parts. In contrast, the rectangular-tower planer allows for convenient grinding of various common parts, including annular parts with diameters smaller than the width of the rectangular tower.
