Power rating

Diesel generator sets are composed of diesel engines and synchronous AC generators. The power that diesel engines can use is limited by the mechanical and thermal loads on the components, therefore, the power allowed for continuous operation, known as rated power, must be specified.

Diesel engines must not be operated above rated power, as this will shorten their lifespan and may even cause accidents.

National standards specify that the rated power marked on the diesel engine plate is divided into the following four categories:

1) 15-minute power rating: This refers to the power at which the diesel engine is permitted to operate for 15 minutes. It typically includes short-term overload operations and rated power with acceleration capabilities, such as the rated power of diesel engines for vehicles and motorcycles.

2) 1-hour Power Rating: The effective power that a diesel engine is permitted to run continuously for 1 hour. Such as the rated power of diesel engines in wheel tractors, locomotives, ships, etc.

3) 12-hour Power Rating: This refers to the effective power that the diesel engine is permitted to run continuously for 12 hours, which is commonly known as the rated power. For example, the rated power of diesel engines used in power station units and construction machinery.

4) Continuous Power: The power that the diesel engine is allowed to run continuously for an extended period.

Operating Principle

Diesel-powered generators operate, converting diesel energy into electrical power.

Inside the diesel engine cylinder, clean air filtered through the air filter is thoroughly mixed with high-pressure atomized diesel spray. Under the compression from the upward stroke of the piston, the volume decreases and the temperature rapidly rises to the diesel's ignition point. Upon ignition, the mixed gas undergoes a violent combustion, causing a rapid expansion that pushes the piston downward, known as 'doing work.' The individual cylinders perform work in a specific sequence, with the thrust acting on the piston converted into the force to rotate the crankshaft via the connecting rods, thereby driving the crankshaft to rotate.

Utilizing the principle of 'electromagnetic induction,' the generator will produce induced electromotive force, which, through a closed load circuit, will generate an electric current.

Diesel generator sets are a type of AC power supply equipment for self-generated power stations, serving as a small, independent power generation unit powered by internal combustion engines to drive synchronous AC generators for electricity production.

Modern diesel generator sets are composed of a diesel engine, a three-phase AC brushless synchronous generator, control cabinet (panel), cooling water tank, coupling, fuel tank, muffler, and common base, forming a rigid whole. The flywheel housing of the diesel engine is directly connected to the front cover of the generator by a shoulder locating method, creating an integrated unit. A cylindrical elastic coupling drives the generator's rotation directly from the flywheel, and the connection is secured with screws, forming a steel structure. This ensures that the crankshaft of the diesel engine and the generator rotor are concentric within the specified range.

To minimize vibration in the engine set, shock absorbers or rubber shock pads are typically installed at the connection points between major components such as diesel engines, generators, radiators, and electrical control boxes, and the common base.
