Ferrous sulfate is widely used in industrial wastewater, urban sewage, sludge dewatering and purification, foundry, papermaking, leather making, and other industries. In water treatment, it serves as a coagulant for water purification and a sludge treatment agent, primarily for the purification of drinking water and industrial water, as well as for various industrial wastewater and urban sewage. It has excellent functions in removing turbidity, decolorization, deoiling, deodorization, sterilization, algae removal, phosphorus removal, and the elimination of oils, COD, BOD, and heavy metal ions. The mixture of ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride, along with calcium hydroxide, can be used to treat sludge from wastewater treatment plants, reducing the sludge volume. Ferrous sulfate is also used as a raw material for the production of alum and other iron salts and pigments, an etching agent for aluminum devices, a purifier for certain industrial gases, and as a biocide. It can also be used for the acid pickling treatment of metals, especially stainless steel and copper. Acidic solutions are used as oxidizing agents for extracting useful components from ores; as chemical reagents in analytical chemistry and laboratory research; in water treatment to remove chlorine and prevent bacterial growth; ferrous sulfate can be used to prepare other iron compounds, such as ferrites; and it can also serve as a corrosion inhibitor, catalyst, and oxidizing agent, among others.
