Sodium metabisulfite is widely used in industrial and other sectors. In the food industry, it can serve as a preservative and bleaching agent for food; during the production of wine and beer, it helps to eliminate and inhibit the growth of microorganisms; in industry, it acts as an antioxidant and disinfectant; in the photographic developer and dye industry, it is used for dye oxidation, bleaching, and decolorization. It is also used in the spice industry for producing vanillin; as a rubber curing agent and decolorizing agent after cotton fabric bleaching. As an organic intermediate, it is used as a reducing agent in dyeing, leather processing, and as a reducing agent in electroplating, oil field wastewater treatment, and ore beneficiation.
