Complexing agents can form complexes with metal ions. In electroplating solutions, except for a few types like acidic solutions for plating iron, nickel, chrome, and copper, which do not require or do not use complexing agents, most other electroplating solutions, such as alkaline solutions for plating silver, gold, copper, zinc, tin, and copper-tin alloys, do require complexing agents. Compounds like cyanides, hydroxides, citrates, phosphates, thiosulfates, and sulfites are widely used as complexing agents in electroplating production. In the dyeing and printing industry, complexing agents are also known as chelating agents, chelating dispersants, metal sequestrants, and water softeners. Complexing agents, especially those with multifunctional organic groups, are increasingly used in the dyeing and printing industry for purposes such as softening water, preventing sedimentation, removing scale from dyeing equipment, preventing fabric bleaching holes, and ensuring vibrant colorfastness.
