Applied
1. Cyclodextrins feature a cavity at the center of their ring structure, with oxygen atoms bonded to -CH- and glucose units, exhibiting thiol affinity. The -OH groups at positions 2, 3, and 6 of glucose are hydrophilic, allowing them to weakly bind other molecules into inclusion complexes. Many substances can be encapsulated by cyclodextrins, including noble gases, halogens, dyes, fragrances, drugs, food, and preservatives. After encapsulation, their stability, volatility, solubility, and reactivity are all improved. This unique property makes cyclodextrins valuable as inclusion materials with wide applications.
2. Applications in the Food Industry: Cyclodextrins, used in the food industry, serve the following purposes: (1) Elimination and masking of peculiar odors; (2) Improvement and modification of food texture; (3) Reduction and elimination of bitter taste; (4) Antioxidant effects; (5) Preservation and enhancement of flavor.
3. Applications in Daily Chemical Industry: Cyclodextrin can also be used as an emulsifier and quality improver in cosmetic manufacturing. It also possesses deodorizing (such as mouth deodorization) and preservative properties, and is suitable for the production of tooth powders.
4. Other Uses: Can be used as an oil-contaminated wastewater treatment agent in environmental protection. The solution of cyclodextrin is used to clean oil tanks and can recover and process the waste liquid to obtain fuel oil.
5. Applications of Cyclodextrins in Chemistry Cyclodextrins are a valuable chemical reagent. The fluorescence intensity of fluorescent pigments is significantly enhanced in their presence, making them useful for the analysis of proteins and amino acids. They are also employed to separate long-chain organic compounds and racemic mixtures, among others.
In addition, adsorbents made from cyclodextrin can be used for adsorption in chromatographic analysis.
